  • Antonio Carlos Jobim was a Brazilian composer, singer/songwriter and musician. He is credited with creating the bossa nova style and is considered by many to be one of the most influential pop composers of the 20th century.

Jobim rose to prominence in his native Brazil after teaming with poet Vinicius de Moraes to write music for the play Orfeu de Conceicao, but his international breakthrough came care of his collaboration American jazz saxophonist Stan Getz, Joao Gilberto and Astrud Gilberto. The 1963 album Getz/Gilberto, featuring such tunes as "The Girl from Ipanema" and "Corcovado," set off a bossa nova craze in the U.S. and became one of the best-selling jazz albums in history.

Following the success of "Getz/Gilberto," American vocalists, including Ella Fitzgerland and Frank Sinatra, championed Jobim's music and recorded many of his songs.

Jobim continued writing and performing his music until his death from heart failure in 1994.
