Anton Volchenkov

  • Russian-born National Hockey League player Anton Volchenkov is a top defenseman for the Ottawa Senators. A strong "stay at home" defenseman, Volchenkov played many of his junior years as a goalie, which may explain his apparent fearlessness when it comes to blocking shots. He led the League in blocked shots during the 2006-2007 regular and post-seasons.

Volchenkov was drafted 21st overall by the Ottawa Senators during the first round of the 2000 NHL Entry Draft. He made his NHL debut in the 2002-2003 season, during which he played 74 games and earned 18 points. A shoulder injury limited his play to 26 games the following season, but he became a full time member of the Senators' lineup and an integral part of their defense beginning in the 2005-2006 season. In April of 2007, Volchenkov signed to a three-year contract extension with Ottawa.
