Anton Chekhov (1860 - 1904) was a Russian author, playwright, and physician who wrote hundreds of short stories.
Much of Chekhov's childhood was spent in poverty. He originally wrote and sold short stories for money while he supported his mother and father and studied to become a doctor as of 1884. He was also the editor of the literary section of Russkaya mysl in 1903 and the founder of two schools in rural Russia.http://people.brandeis.edu/~teuber/chekhovbio.html He earned a reputation for satire in his depiction of street-level life in Russia. His writing style brought him to the attention of the most famous Russian writer of the day, Dmitry Grigorovich. Grigorovich advised Chekov to work harder on the literary aspects of his writing and Chekhov heeded the advice. He went on to write scores of short stories and more than a dozen plays. He is widely regarded as the father of the modern short story.
