In most cases the software is able to remove or quarantine the infected files (if the latest virus definitions are installed). As virus technology became more complex the anti virus companies have had to adapt to counter. Today they are able to scan and trace a malicious code's activity and port usage. Viruses themselves come from a variety of origins including amateur programmers, scammers, and even organized crime.
