Antimatter

Antimatter is a kind of matter composed of subatomic antiparticles like antiprotons, antineutrons and positrons, which carry a reversed electric charge and are the opposite of normal particles like protons, neutrons and electrons.

Antimatter is somewhat of a mystery in modern science. It may be explained as something that is exactly equal to matter itself, but also its polar opposite. However, it appears as though there is far more actual matter in the universe than there is antimatter.http://www.particleadventure.org/antimatter.html

Antimatter research began with a physicist named Paul Dirac, who came up with a mathematical equation that implied an opposite universe made up of antimatter. The elusive nature of antimatter has made it difficult to study, but in 1930 scientists set out to try to find it.http://press.web.cern.ch/livefromcern/antimatter/history/AM-history00.html

Antimatter Breakthrough

In fall of 2010, scientists in Geneva announced that a breakthrough in antimatter research had been achieved. In the past, any antimatter that was created in a laboratory environment had disappeared instantaneously, making it impossible to study. However, European Organization for Nuclear Research spokesperson Jeffrey Hangst reported that scientists can now contain the individual atoms to keep them visible for just over one-tenth of a second, and in some cases longer than that. This breakthrough may allow humans to explain some of the mysteries in physics.http://www.mercurynews.com/news/ci_16651893?source=rss&nclick_check=1

Quote

"For every one billion particles of antimatter there were one billion and one particles of matter. And when the mutual annihilation was complete, one billionth remained - and that's our present universe." - Albert Einstein, on the "Big Bang" theory
