Antigua and Barbuda are a pair of islands that together form a single nation located on the eastern edge of the Caribbean Sea. The islands are a part of the Lesser Antilles Archipelago.
History
Christopher Columbus landed on Antigua in 1493, and the islands have since been colonized by Spain, France and Britain. On November 1, 1981, Antigua and Barbuda became independent of the United Kingdom under the Commonwealth of Nations. Its government is currently run as a Parliamentary Democracy and Federal Constitutional Monarchy, with its chief political figures being the British monarch Elizabeth II, the Governor-General Louise Lake-Tack and the Prime Minister Baldwin Spencer.
