Anti-Death Penalty Day: Europe, with the exception of Poland, recognizes its first unofficial Anti-Death Penalty Day on October 10, 2007. The EU attempted to establish an official day of observance, but a staunchly conservative Polish delegation vetoed the motion. While the abolition of capital punishment is a requirement for EU membership, Poland wishes to reopen the debate. Poland has expressed its desire to add exceptions to the death penalty ban, while outlawing abortion, and euthanasia.
