Anthony Minghella was a British film and stage director who won the 1996 "Best Director" Oscar for The English Patient. On March 18, 2008 he died of a hemorrhage following surgery for cancer of the neck and tonsils.
A memorial event for the director was held on the Isle of Wight over the weekend of March 14, 2009. It was hosted by his siblings Goia and Dominic Minghella, and included a Minghella Movie Marathon.BBC: Stars celebrate Minghella's work (March 14, 2009)

Career Highlights
Minghella made his directorial debut in the 1990 film, Truly, Madly, Deeply and also directed Cold Mountain starring Nicole Kidman and Jude Law. Outside of film and TV, Minghella directed two volumes of plays, including a production of Puccini's Madame Butterfly that was performed at New York's Metropolitan Opera House in 2006. Minghella's most recent project, completed but not yet broadcast at the time of his death, was a production of Alexander McCall Smith's novel, The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency.
