    Cleggett began his career as an outfielder, but switched to pitching while playing in college a the University of California Riverside. In his senior year, he pitched 24.2 innings, recording four saves and striking out 27 batters.     He had short stays with the West Michigan Whitecaps and Toledo Mudhens in 2006, then was acquired by the New York Yankees later in the year in a trade involving Gary Sheffield. Clegett played for the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Red Barons and the Tampa Yankees in 2007, then spent much of the 2008 season with the Trenton Thunder.
