How exactly would a full grown panther react to being shot by a Taser?

I mean if this wasn't a toy, it probably could have ended badly.

I was a bit surprised when I heard about this story. I cannot imagine that Animal Control or a Zoological Expert would have recommended the use of a taser device on such a large cat.

The taser is designed to subdue a human; sized to provide an electrical shock that is sufficient to temporarily disable a normal-sized man or woman. The shock is delivered through metal darts connected to the device by fine wires; darts that are designed to slightly penetrate the thickness of human skin.

The big cat would undoubtedly require a different level of electrical charge and metal dart design. Why would these police officers believe that the taser would actually work on a big cat?

I hope that law enforcement everywhere is contacted by the taser manufacturer to make certain that they understand the device is intended for use on humans, not animals.

Oh... to answer your question. How exactly would a full grown panther react to being shot by a Taser? The big cat would be one ticked-off hombre and would likely be antagonized into harming the police officers. The law enforcement should feel very lucky that this was a toy panther!

I suspect you would end up with a very angry panther. You better have a net ready before the Taser effects wear off.

You'd make it angry, you wouldn't like it when it's angry.

There are more than one strength of taser.
This link has a video of a bull being taken down with a taser.
http://www.sshep.com/stun_gun.htm
I find it very uncomfortable to watch so do so at your own risk. The bull is clearly stunned. Until they turn it off. Then he's pissed.
A bull is twice the size of a panther so I'm sure it would stop an attack, assuming it was a panther grade taser.

Please don't tase me bro.

Good point about there being different grades / strengths of tasers. I just wouldn't expect that panther-strength tasers are your typical standard issue for local law enforcement in Warren, Michigan. Ha!

I've not been to Warren, but maybe in Vegas :)
I wonder if cop tasers have different settings like Angry Hobo, Teenage Driver, Panther In Tube...

A tidbit about tasers on the official Taser site
"The energy can penetrate up to two cumulative inches of clothing, or one inch per probe."
I cant seem to find voltage specs on their site but the link I posted above has many examples of taser use in animal control including the use of standard police issue tasers on a tiger which is much bigger than a panther.
You have no idea how much it pains me to say but I think the cops may have done the best they could in this situation.

wdawe's answer is accurate. Don't know who marked it unhelpful, or why.

Taser's responses to similar questions:

"When used against a 2000 lb buffalo it stunned him for only an instant. He dropped onto his hind quarters, but was back up in 2 seconds and became
very angry."

And...

"Since extensive tests have not been undertaken we can only speculate that a TASER® Weapon would probably stun the animal momentarily, perhaps long enough to throw a net over them. "

I love questions like this. Clearly the only way to find out how a police-issued taser gun would affect a live panther, is to get a live panther and a police-issued taser gun, and run some experiments! (Mythbusters anyone?)
You can probably get access to a police-issued taser through a law-enforcement supply company, or you might get a local law-official to assist you with your tests, but you'll likely have some difficulty getting anyone to let you borrow their panther. The obvious solution here is to steal one, or better yet just go where someone has a panther and perform your tests at that location.

Obviously, start out with the taser on its lowest setting, and after each test shot on the panther, log your results, then step up to the next-higher setting and re-test, and so on until you reach the maximum level of the taser, or until the panther kills you.

Good luck!

Born in Warren. Actually, no, born in Madison Heights because Warren didn't have a hospital when I was born. I hear that Warren has its own hospital now. /wouldn't know, live in California.

Is it considered a variable if we use a mountain lion instead of a panther? I think I can borrow one of those. You know, for science.
