Your son wanted for Christmas was a Red Ryder BB Gun carbine action 200 shot range model air rifle. Did you buy it for him?

Your son, we'll call him Ralphie, wanted nothing more than his Red Ryder BB gun. Did he wake up to find one under the tree this year?

I just saw that movie for the first time this year :) Yeah, I'm behind...

No, I would not. The rule in my house was always "no toy guns, because no gun is ever a toy." That was an important distinction, because my house had real guns in it (though they were kept locked up). Because I will probably have guns in my house, I would not consider it responsible to allow a child a toy gun. Because the rules for real guns would need to be applied to the toy, in order for there to be absolutely no confusion about how guns need to be treated, the BB gun could not really be "played with." I suppose he could take his BB gun out target shooting, under supervision, but it would have to be locked up and treated just like the real guns, so why not wait a few more years and get him a real gun? A real gun is a good investment.

I would, however, explain to him why he is not getting the BB gun, so he understands it is not because he was bad, or because Santa forgot him.

I live in the country - kids wanting rifles is not so uncommon (they shoot coyotes and gophers). So really it would depend on his age and why he wanted it, but probably not. We have a BB Gun already, although to be fair I dont know what kind it is... but it is used by any one of us for gopher control - I am an animal lover but those little guys make holes that can hurt our bigger animals if their legs go in it. I have never shot a coyote though- a BB would cause them pain which would be unfair if you cannot kill it.

Anyhow I am getting off topic, I really dont know what I would or wouldnt do for sure, BUT I do know I would never call my kid Ralphie!

No, my child (and I wouldn't name him Ralphie) wouldn't be getting a BB gun. I'm almost completely against guns on principle, and I'm most certainly completely against the glorification of violence in stuff marketed to boys. Buying a gun would reinforce both of these things for my son.

Of course, since he's asking for it, it's likely been reinforced quite a bit already. It might not be any use by this point, but I'd talk to him about why I believe these things. Maybe I could make a tiny dent in his opinion.

This would depend on little Ralphie's age and demonstrated responsibility. Personally I would hesitate to give a child under 12 a BB gun, but like I said, it also depends on their maturity for responsibility. So if Ralphie is 12 or over and is responsible, he would have found his most coveted BB gun under the tree. If not, a Nerf launcher would be the best that either Santa or I could do.

It would depend on the child. Some children are able to handle the responsibility of having a gun. But remember a BB gun is not a toy. It can hurt, maim, and sometimes kill living things. If a person must give their child a BB gun then they should make sure and teach the child what to do and what not to do with it. Guns of any kind are not toys and should never be treated like toys.

My sons and daughter enjoy playing toy guns but I don't want to give this toy to them yet. They're too young to have this yet. I'm giving them other gifts. Merry Christmas!!!
