Your Mother whispers to you that the lady beside you has a hideous outfit on and the lady hears her. Her whisper is LOUD! What do you do?

I would loudly whisper something back, such as "mom, I think you forgot to take your medication today! And why aren't you wearing your glasses?" then I would elbow her.

If the woman was looking at us, I would give her a sympathetic look and apologize for my mother, who is "losing touch with reality these days."

I would drag my mother away from the lady. If the lady threw an annoyed look at us, I would smile and nod apologetically.

My mom used to do this a lot. Because she speaks Mandarin and most people don't understand Mandarin, she often forgot to lower her voice. But now more and more people can speak Mandarin, so I often feel embarassed by her.

Thankfully, she is now more careful and refrain from doing this. This is because my sister and I often scold her whenever she did that.

I'd reply with my opinion as to whether it was or was not hideous. If it's hideous, it's hideous and the women wearing it needs to know. I don't think the truth should be withheld in any circumstance.

I would first pretend as if I heard or noticed nothing and would silently come out with my mother as early as possible. If the lady speaks out, then I would try to make the situation light by putting in some humour. If she is serious, then I shall apologize on behalf of my mother, but at the same time, I would not let the lady insult my mother.

It is really a very difficult situation.

Hope nobody falls in such a situation. Thanks

This has happened to me, unfortunately, and there's really no good thing to do in this situation. There are things absolutely not to do, of course. You shouldn't make any sort of comment about the outfit. If it's a compliment, it'll feel forced or like a "pity compliment," and if it's another insult, it's as bad as she is. It's tempting to apologize, but in turn, there's no way to do that without putting down your mother.

Usually, what I do is express my disapproval somehow -- give her a look, usually -- and tell her that she embarrassed me when we're out of earshot of the woman. It's not a perfect solution, but it's all I know.

Supposing your mom is next to you too, tell your mom to than change her own outfit, & you thought her outfit was hideous too (your mom's). After-all, your mom could be speaking about herself. ;)

Ack! I have witnessed this kind of thing happening before when people comment on clothes, hair, weight, shoes, looks, etc. Some don't even bother to whisper and say it all right out loud. I agree with quesera about saying something clever that is designed to put a stop to it.

In fact, I don't even like it when someone makes comments about people who can't hear it. An elderly visitor sat in my living room one time criticizing the physical looks of a lady photographer who was being interviewed on television. I immediately said that it's a good thing we all don't have to be beauty queens to be important in this world. That put an end to that!

When there's a really obnoxious thing going on, such as mean-spirited racist comments, I've been known to say exactly what I think of that right out loud and walk out of the room to make it crystal clear that I won't tolerate it. Of course, that's a whole different thing than just commenting on an outfit. Thank goodness it hasn't happened around me very often for a long time!
