You're going to an island. You can bring a magic radio that will get one show only. What show is it?

Don and Mike? Howard Stern? Leo Laporte? Dr Demento? Casey Kasem?
Tip for best answer: M$2.00
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

On Point - Tom Ashbrook - Covers newsy things, science, and some more esoteric topics. It's an informative, but entertaining enough listen, and Ashbrook is a great guy to run the show - very well informed on most topics, lets you know when he isn't, and is generally a polite skeptic, prodding people gently for better/more detailed answers.

Looks like today they do the usual week in news, and then in the second hour go in to the issue of concussions in the NFL, a very said topic when you start hearing about a lot of ex players. I'll probably listen to that later. It's a very nice mix of news and "other", and is generally quality material, not too light, and not too heavy.

I'm not sure what show would fall into this category, but I'd want a music show that would play a wide variety of music - anything from rap to opera - depending on the host's mood or the theme of the day.

While news about the outside world might be nice, music speaks to the heart. And if I was alone on an island, that would be what I'd need more than anything else.

Leo Laporte the Tech guy - so i know what's going on. That, or a magic radio that streams the twit live stream

Definitely the TWIT live stream, not so much the Tech Guy show. Love Leo, but TWIT is so much more entertaining.

yeah, but wouldn't that be dead air half the time? "sorry, the tricaster died!"

and that's more a station than a show. me, i'd listen to an hour and a half of TWiT every week rather than 6 hours of the tech guy.

now, if Leo would only do "A very special TWiT with Jason, Pournelle, Cory Doctorow, Merlin Mann and (wait for it....) Wendy. THAT would be a show to take to an island.

The now defunct "Coast to Coast with Art Bell." I figured a magic radio could also go back in time to the good old days. Informative, entertaining, and not a "news" show which will not do you a whole lot of good on a desert island. George Noory is good, but he's no Art Bell.

Good point on the magic part of the radio. If that could get old shows, then this would be my favorite too!

The Ron and Fez Show. I didn't want to love them, but I do.
They just make me laugh.
XM 202.

I would post a video, but this question is not in the NSFW category...

PS. I should have put my husband's show in here. But he's currently off air. Thanks Clear Channel.

The Alex Jones Show would be my pick. I find it to be a thought-provoking, informational and libertarian news talk show. Great guests too (like Ron Paul).

his show is sort of a cross between Chuck Harder and Art Bell, right? Maybe with a little extra tin foil?

Well, i only listen to fishing shows or music on the radio, and just one radio show might drive me insane so static would probably be my preference. if i have to pick though, i would actually pick one that i have never listened to, to learn something new or about new culture. so my pick would be a show on ANN All Night Nippon

Assuming you will be stranded on this island forever It would have to be The Grateful Dead hour, of course.....huge variety of music, great for chillin on an island and keeping the positive attitude. What would be the point of listening to talk radio commentary on current events if you are stuck on an island. Might as well give into it and enjoy the island experience, maybe learn how to ferment some coconut wine, go for a swim....Just watch out for ..."THE OTHERS!"

The Tech Guy with Leo Laporte. It always has at least a few interesting things and would keep me amused. Unfortunately, since I'm not on an island I haven't listened to it in months.

yeah, but wouldn't it be frustrating to hear about all the cool new tech stuff that's out, then realize that your shell phone doesn't support 3G or bluetooth?

I would choose NPR's All Things Considered. It has news, music and spans all my interests.

It would have to be BBC Radio 4's Desert Island Discs, a weekly show broadcast in the UK

Every week, they ask a celebrity what 8 pieces of music they would take to a desert island with them. The celeb is also invited to choose a luxury item and a book to be marooned with them. They are also given the Bible or some other appropriate religious book for them, and the works of Shakespeare. At the end, the celeb is asked which one of the eight they would save if waves threatened to wash all their music away.
The show has been going for years. It was originally devised by a presenter called Roy Plomley who died quite a while ago now. The BBC are only allowed to keep the programme going with other presenters provided they don't change the format. It's comfortingly familiar and old fashioned and wouldn't make me sad, especially if my magic radio could be tuned to get all the previous programmes. I could survive several years on my island with just this.

My pick would be The Prairie Home Companion. Some fun skits, some funny stuff, an interesting variety of music, and just a smattering of current events. If I'm on an island, I don't really need traffic reports or to know what's going on with property taxes and elections in places I don't live! Just give me my drink in a coconut shell, my seafood lunch, my umbrella, and my radio, baby.

"Fresh Air" with Terry Gross on NPR--entertaining and thought provoking.
http://www.npr.org/templates/rundowns/rundown.php?prgId=13

Friday's edition featured interviews with Bob Woodward on W Mark Felt, the man who's been Deep Throat for Woodward's Watergate Break-In Story, as well as a piece on Paul Weyrich, who coined the term "moral majority".

I would tune in to radio talk show host HOWARD STERN!!!

Yeah BABY!!

24 hours of retarded entertainment, to numb the mind of reality that I am never going to be able to use a computer again. It might help me from killing myself.
