You open a Christmas gift, only to find it to be the most ridiculous, or ugly item you've ever seen. You hate it. How do you react?

In my family, we have an agreement that if one of us receives a gift that we don't like, we politely tell the giver so we can return it and get something better. This is the result of years of us getting, for instance, clothes that we never wear, and then finding them years later with the tags still attached. We just don't want to waste money, is all. A gift that we don't like and don't use is a waste.
If it's someone else, though, I smile and pretend to like it, and maybe consider regifting or selling it once I get home. From what I understand, agreements like the above aren't too common.

M$I don't think I handled the situation well. In hindsight, I know the other poster is correct: I should have smiled and graciously thanked her for the gift, privately vowing to toss it once I got home.
