You find $100 on the street. There's no one around. Do you keep it?

This happened to me today (no joke). I found over $100 on the sidewalk. I wasn't sure what to do but eventually I took it home. I'm not sure what to do. Do I spend it? Turn it in? Give it to charity?
Tip for best answer: M$1.00

The right thing to do is to try to find the rightful owner, but that could be a very hard thing to so.

If it was in front of a store you could speak with the store owner and let them know you found "something of value" - don't tell them what it is - and ask if anyone has been looking for something.

I agree with this, if I lost $100 I would probably return to where I lost it and would ask the closest business if anybody returned it.

I would feel compelled to at least try and find the rightful owner. If there were a vendor or business nearby, I would inquire if anyone had reported misplacing money.

If the owner could not be found, I would keep the $100, but since it was "found" money, I would also consider making a charitable contribution of some reasonable portion of it. If we all practiced to "pay it forward" a bit more in our lives, this world would be a better place.

Outside? On the sidewalk? I'd keep it.

It's extremely unlikely you'll ever find the original owner for bills dropped on the street, and who would you "turn it in" to? There's a pretty good chance that person will simply pocket it.

If it's really, REALLY bothering you, give it to charity, or directly to someone who could use it more than you. But hey, these are tough economic times - ya gotta take your luck where you find it!

When I was 9. I found 5 twenties with my friend Naomi. On the street, next to some bushes.
We put up a sign that asked "lost something of value?"
We waited 2 weeks (didn't get a call)
We split the money and I bought a coloring book and the biggest set of Marvy coloring pens.
I believe you should keep it as long as you let give them a chance to get it back.

Did you find it before, or after answering the "Are you broke because you want to be?" question..?

I'd bet it was after, and this find is a work of some good spirit.

Do I need to elaborate?

Absolutely keep it. It is cash. Unless you found $100,000 in a bag with paint on them, it is yours. There is no way to trace the owner.

A friend of mine once found a bunch of 20 dollar bills on the ground, several thousand dollars that seemed to just be sitting near a tree. He was walking down the sidewalk counting it when a police officer saw him holding a wad of bills.

The police officer rolled down his window and immediately told him to hand over the cash, because there had been a bank robbery and the suspects had come down that road.

He handed them the cash he had in his hand but kept the rest. This, of course, is a situation that requires a bit more ethical consideration =)

Haha. Just for future reference, tell your friend to never count money on the street. Not because he could be stopped by a cop but because he could've easily gotten mugged!

Funny you should say that, because he was a kid at the time, and was also in the worst section of DC when he was "pulled over" on the sidewalk. Kids.

for this same reason, you never count your money at the ATM. Get your cash and go away fast (especially at night and alone). Even if the money is not complete, there is nothing you can do while standing in front of the ATM.

I think it's a contextual thing. If it was a $20, you'd keep it, no question. If it were a roll of money, say a couple thousand, you'd probably turn it into the police and let them try and find a legitimate owner. But the $100 seems to fall in between. If the real owner could be easily identified, you'd make the effort, because it's kind of a big hit for them. But if there's no-one around, if the neighborhood is pretty open to people passing through, and if there are no obvious indicators, I'd keep it.

You're right. I've found lots of money. $5, $10, $20... In random places like the middle of the mall or the airport. I once found $50 crossing the street! But $100 is a lot so it makes you think.
No one was around. I think the owner was long gone by then.

If there's no one there sure I would keep the $100. If I saw who dropped it or had any other indication of who it belonged to it would only be right and ethical to return it but if not keep it!

As long as it was only cash and not in anything, I would keep it. It would be very difficult to find the true owner of cash by itself. This has happened to me a few times, most recently I found a $100 bill by my car at Six Flags. No one else was nearby, so I kept it.

Just cash. Rolled up $20 bills. So obvious they fell out of someone's pocket and they just kept on walking. I've seen it happen and if I see it happen I holler at the person but it had just been raining, no one was around.

I would see if anyone is looking for it, but if no one is around and no one comes around, yes.. I would keep it.

So in other words, if the owner makes himself/herself known - I'd give the money back without a doubt.

In this scenario, it sounds like the owner isn't around nor is anyone else, and we don't know who it belongs too, so you might as well pick it up.

Sounds like a good time to ask 100 1$ questions on Answers :)

Finding the rightful owner of an unmarked bill is impossible. If I found a wallet with money in it I would return it in a heart beat.

A friend of mine lost her wallet once and she got it back but without any money in it! I'm lucky enough to have never lost my wallet. But you're right. If you find a wallet the first thing you need to do is look for an ID and turn it in/call the person.

Yes, I believe it finder keepers like the saying goes... The money note has no claimers attatch to it because its on the ground. Its free cash. I would spend as a bounes cash. Its like finding dollar bills on the ground. Same concept but bigger reward.

Unless it was illegal money thrown away from a robbery of some sort. But either way money is insured by the FDIC if its stolen. But for your comment its like picking up a quater on the ground. No foul play was induice by anybody.. Free cash..

I've found bills on the ground before - never as much as $100, but still. If there's only a very-slim chance of being able to ID the rightful owner, as is the case with loose bills, just keep it, especially when there isn't anyone around for you to ask, "Hey, did you drop some money?" If that bothers you, I'd suggest giving the cash to a charity you like.

However, I've turned in wallets and other such things, because the rightful owner can identify his wallet by how it looks, ID that's in it (hopefully), how much cash was in it, et cetera.

Wallets, cell phones... All that I've found and returned. because it's easy. A cell phone you can just call the last number dialed or the one that says Home or Mom or Dad and a wallet is pretty easy if it has ID. If it doesn't have ID or a credit card which is unlikely then it's pretty much the same dilemma as finding loose cash which is what happened to me.

Hmmm, this may be a cop out but I take any cash I find and donate to the next charity bucket I find. Last Christmas I found $20 on the ground outside the mall, picked it up and stuck it in the Salvation Army ball inside.

Wallets, cell phones and purses (I've found a couple of each) I give to the police or security.

If the cash was a large amount or identifiable in some way (wad of cash with a monogrammed money clip for instance) I'd take to the police.

I think you need to examine the circumstances in which you found the $100. Was it just one or two bills or was it a significant amount of bills of lower denomination? I assume that it was just one bill, because it's pretty hard not to notice that you drop about 10-20 dollar bills. Therefore, either someone with a lot of money was walking around and being careless, or someone was transferring money from one place to another. If the second idea was true, then the person would have probably realized the money was gone and been back for it in about 10-15 minutes, so if you waited you probably would have encountered someone looking for their money. On the other hand, if it was someone just carrying around several hundred dollar bills, they probably won't notice and won't care that they lost $100, so you're probably safe keeping it.

I don't understand why the amount of money is in direct correlation with the amount of guilt you should feel for taking the money.
I would feel horrible losing 20 dollars, I would also feel bad if I lost 1 dollar. I've lost a dollar before, and that felt really bad because it was the only dollar I had to take the bus, it was embarrassing having to take money from strangers to pay for that ride home.
You should keep the money, and feel good that it wasn't $1,000.
My opinion is you should have just left it on the street, if you didn't want this moral dilemma in the first place.

You should keep it, because there is no way to be sure that you were returning it to the rightful owner. I know for a fact that some businesses will keep the money if you turn it in. They won't wait for a certain amount of time and then notify you. They won't try to find the real owner.

Absolutely, if it was a bag full of money then I'd turn it in but a solitary bill blowing in the wind I'd keep. Someone was the beneficiary of a $50 bill I dropped one time. By the time I realized it was missing I had covered so much ground I had no idea where to look.

I say keep it. If there is no chance of finding the owner (and if nobody is around, the chance is slim), there is no point in trying. If you feel guilty, then give to a charity that you know will put it to good use. Or, you can buy 100 Mahalo Dollars and ask some questions in humor. (I bet you would be entertained for at least an hour.) Just don't waste your time looking for the owner if you don't have a clue who it belongs to. Time is more valuable than money.

A. No one because the first four don't exist and the dumb blonde thought it was a gum wrapper.
