I honestly think men should take a back seat on naming children, so long as the kids will have their father's last name, which is usually the case. I do understand, however, that many men want a child with their name. I would ask "dad" to compromise and allow the "weird" name to be the kids middle name, at best. If the name could be shortened, I would ask "dad" for an acceptable nickname. While I wouldn't tell him he had a "weird" name, I would suggest to them that each generation has trends in naming, and many beloved family names ("Edgar," "Ezekiel," etc., come to mind) are harder for children to have and are best used as middle names.

Depends on the name. There are a lot of weird but totally legitimate names out there. Some of my favorite boy's names, while they have plenty of history, would be frowned upon. (And by the same token, I find a lot of popular boy's names kind of weird.) If it's legitimate, and I don't completely hate it, why not?

But if it's not a name at all, or a last name, or something completely off-the-wall, I'd resist with all my strength. As a compromise, maybe it could be his middle name and he'd only have to use it on official documents. When he's 18 he could even get it changed. Either way, it won't be intrusive.

Is his name just strange? Or is it strange and awful?

And actually, I wouldn't even BE with a man who "insisted" that ANY of his children be named after himself. IMO, that's a sign of a huge ego, and an over-blown sense of his own importance.

That depends on the name.If its a family tradition then I would do my utmost to keep it going.

Well In my family, dad was named after grandpa, my oldest bro was named after dad and grandpa, and my nephew has the same name as the other three. It's a tradition there, and I see nothing wrong with it, and my nephew at age 19 says when he has a son he will be the 5th with the name. The first name is Elliott, which is fine for a man over 50, but not for a child in my eyes, but hey there are always nicknames right? My mom began calling my brother by his middle name when he was a child, perhaps that is a possibility for your family.
