The Yogurt Shop Murders occured in Austin, Texas in 1991. Four teenage girls were murdered in a TCBY: I Can't Believe It's Yogurt shop. The case took several interesting turns that eventually spanned 18 years. A recent episode of 48 Hours Mystery on CBS examined the case, which resulted in two wrongful convictions.

The original suspect in the case was known serial killer Kenneth Allen McDuff, who was later sentenced to death in a seperate homicide. McDuff allegedly confessed to the Yogurt Shop Murders on the day that he was executed, but DNA from evidence taken from the scene of the crime was not a match to McDuff. It was believed that McDuff offered a false confession to the murders. There were also two Mexican nationals at the time of the investigation that falsely confessed to the crimes.

Eventually, there were four suspects taken into custody for the murders of 13 year old Amy Ayers, 17 year old Jennifer Harbison, 15 year old Sarah Harbison, and 17 year old Eliza Thomas. The girls had been reportedly shot in the head, bound and gagged, and then set on fire. Firefighters discovered the four bodies stacked on top of one another.

The first suspect arrested in 1999 was Robert Springsteen of Charleston, West Virginia. Michael James Scott, Maurice Pierce, and Forest Wellborn were later arrested in Texas. Charges against Wellborn were dropped by a Texas Grand Jury. Prosecutors in the case admitted that DNA from the scene of the crime had been compared to as many as 70 other people with no known match. Charges were also later dropped against Maurice Pierce. Scott and Springsteen both went to trial for murder. Although both were initially convicted, internal problems with the Austin Police Department led to a Texas Court of Appeals reversal of Springsteen's conviction in 2006. In 2007, the US Supreme Court refused to reinstate the charges.

in 2008, defense attorneys for both Scott and Springsteen requested DNA testing. DNA taken from the scene of the Yogurt Shop Murders did not match either Scott or Springsteen. Seven of the jurors in the earlier trials admitted that if that evidence had been made available earlier, they would have never convicted the two.

In October of 2009, both Scott and Springsteen were released from jail and charges were dropped by the prosecutors. A statement made that day by the Travis County District Attorny indicated that DNA technology that was not previously available in the case indicated that whomever was responsible for the Yogurt Shop Murders was still at large.

To this date, about the only things known about the Yogurt Shop killer is that he is in fact male. Both Scott and Springsteen spent over ten years in jail for crimes that they did not commit.

For a period of time, Austin News 8 maintained a section of their website that was devoted to the Yogurt Shop Murders, but that information is no longer online. The full episode and commentary from 48 Hours Mystery can be seen in the links below. Mack White has also written a book on this subject.
