Your yoga mat is lightweight, easily portable, keeps you from slipping in standing poses and gives you cushioning for seated or reclining poses. Like anything that's carted around, plopped on the floor and walked on, your yoga mat gets dirty and unsanitary. Clean it from time to time. After all, some of the poses and relaxation have your face resting right on your mat.

Step 1
Clean your mat with a good spritz. Almost any company or store that sells yoga mats sells sprays to clean your mat. Or save money by making a spray at home. Wai Lana Yoga recommends mixing 1 part water to 3 parts white vinegar. Or add a few drops of mild liquid detergent to a cup or two of water in a spray bottle. You can add a couple drops of essential oil. Essential oils create a nice scent, and some, such as eucalyptus, lavender or tea tree oils, have antibacterial properties. Dry your mat completely before rolling it.

Step 2
Wipe your mat. Several companies make individually wrapped wipes specifically for yoga mats. Carry some with you in your gym bag, and clean your mat before and after your yoga class. Don't use baby wipes on your yoga mat. They make it slippery and can interfere with the mat's stickiness.

Step 3
Give your mat a bath occasionally. Put your mat in the tub for a thorough cleaning. It's a good idea to do this with a new mat before you use it. Add a few drops of mild detergent to a bath of cool or slightly warm water. Unroll your mat in the water. Give it a gentle scrub with a washcloth or sponge, and let it soak for about twenty minutes. Rinse the mat well and remove it from the tub. Blot excess water with a towel, or place a towel on each side of your mat and roll it up. Don't squeeze the mat. Dry your mat by unrolling it and hanging it over a rack or clothesline.

You can use a spray bottle with bleach and water. This should clean and take away any smell it may have.

I use Clorox Wipes on my Yoga Mat. Also, I place two or three dryer sheets (such as Downey or Bounce) on it and roll it up when not in use. This keeps it clean and smelling fresh.
