Hi connectedgeek,

I am not sure you would want to turn your old xbox into a streaming device, unless you plan to upgrade the hard drive to something a lot larger. I will suggest using the xbox as the media center rather than the server.

I have an xbox with unleashX and XBMC installed as the primary media center. I have a file server with Freenas installed and UPnP enabled. This serves as the streaming media server which xbmc can see without a hitch.

Now to answer your question.

You will likely have to mod the xbox with software (not opening it) or using a mod chip (opening it). the easiest is the softmod with splinter cel and the linux save game. I have set up an ftp server, but am unaware of a media streaming service you can enable.

I am sure there is some way, but I cannot be certain since mine is not set up that way. I will follow up with you if i can find the details on the modded xbox's ability to work as a media server.

Good information. Could have used some video and/or more links; however it was a good answer. Thanks! ;)

FOLLOW UP:

After tinkering around with the latest build of T3CH XBMC, I do see there is an option to allow the user to enable a UPnP server. This would likely be used IF the xbox has its HDD upgraded.

A good place to look is the XBMC project. ( http://xbmc.org/ )

I'm thinking about getting an old XBOX to do exactly this. Gamestop has them at $40.00 plus tax, I will look at the pawn shops (haven't priced them since just after the 360 came out and they were asking 100-150 for old xboxen.)

I'm concerned that I'l be unable to find the game needed for doing the softpatch, but I suppose i can pull the drive and image it.

right? then, i guess i need to find a converter so I can plug in regular USB drives. monoprice has those, right?
