"Live" means that you are streaming data. Up and down.
Various reports are ~10MB/hour down. ~6MB/hr upstream. That's not much traffic at any one time. Any residential DSL connection can handle that, as long as the latency is not too great.
But, if you host a game, it gets higher for every additional player. If you watch previews/demos, etc. it goes much higher.
Most people do not understand how networks work. They think that clicking a "download" button is the only way to download.
Load a web page...you're downloading all of the text and graphics.
Launch iTunes...you're talking with the iTunes web site. Perform a search and you've downloaded the query results. Play a song sample...you've downloaded that stream of audio data.

That doesn't include any other traffic...so if you're on metered service it will cost you a lot per MB.
The anger is not necessarily at any loss in bandwidth or increase in cost. It is about a waste of resources. Same way you might take a 20 minutes showering instead of 5. The dollar amount is not much (zero if you're in an apartment without a meter). Problem is...the resource is used without a beneficial result. You're not any cleaner.
So, you may be using the resource for your own entertainment, but there is no benefit to the rest of the household. Further, those hours lost to gaming could be better spent on study, laundry, a paying job, pro-bono work for a charity...which looks good on a resume when you're looking for a job... Funny how it all points to getting a job. Or, at the very least, you could be sleeping, so you're more productive, efficient, etc. during your waking hours.
You just need to see where the logic is coming from. Best of luck.
