Every video comes with its native format, but you can adjust the screen size of each video while it's playing, as I understand it.
With a video turned on, hit the A Button on your Xbox controller to bring up the video contorls. Go to the icon that's third from the right. It looks like a rectangle and is labled "Display Mode".
Hit A on that icon and you can change the video's format, ranging from its Native format (which is tiny for some reason) to letterbox, stretch, full screen, etc. The same as is possible with an HD TV.
You can also adjust the Display settings for your entire Xbox in the settings pane of the dashboard. Go to Settings, then Display, then choose widescreen if you have a widescreen TV if you haven't already. That'll adjust everything so that it's ready for your TV, and make your choices in Netflix adjust to a widescreen TV.
Hope that helps. I think adjusting the screen settings is the closest you can get to adjusting the playback.

Given the sheer quantity of 4:3 content produced over the years, it’s not surprising this is an issue as folks upgrade to widescreen 16:9 television sets.
Like it is said, you can always adjust the display ratio when a playing.

Is it possible to get Netflix on your Xbox to stream anamorphically?
Some Netflix movies that have widescreen DVD's stream in fullscreen (such as "Executive Decision") while thers show up in widescreen format, but non-anamorphic, so they appear inside a thin black box in the middle of my TV (like "The Age of Innocence").
Is there a way to see which movies are available in widescreen, or to get them all to play widescreen?

It's an HDTV. I have definitely seen anamorphic movies on there, but it seems like lately, everything I watch is reverting to 4:3, even films that SHOULD be 16:9. Very strange.

That's definitely weird. Since my broadband is stable, most of the time I forget that I am watching the movie streamed instead of a disk. It is very rare to see something as 4:3 unless it is an older TV show or a crappy horror movie, almost everything else is showing up anamorphic.
How's your broadband?

In Netflix , Standard-Definition( non-HD) movies are often not downloaded in a widescreen format. I couldn't believe it when I downloaded Aliens and I saw that I was seeing a movie with black bars on the side, since it was only in 4:3 format. Given the sheer quantity of 4:3 content produced over the years, it’s not surprising this is an issue as folks upgrade to widescreen 16:9 television sets.
