I am still attempting to find time to play this game, however what I've played through so far I've really enjoyed.
The gameplay was a little tough to get used to, what with it being 3rd person-esque. After playing for about 30 minutes or so, I wasn't noticing any difference and ended up having a really good time with the game.
The dark side of this game reminded me a lot of Doom 3, although Dead Space did a much better job of course. It wasn't terrifying, but at the same time it wasn't boring either. There were definitely some surprises, but it wasn't overdone which was nice.
One of the more surprising things about this game to me was the fact that the graphics are pretty impressive even considering I have a somewhat-outdated system. It was nice to see that they can program efficiently enough to still make it a decent experience for people who can't upgrade every year. (For those wondering, I'm running an FX-55, 2GB ram, 7950 GX)
The dismemberment was a nice twist, however the killing seemed awfully repetitive and didn't offer much for dynamic deaths. I say this because Dead Space kind of almost marketed the dismemberment as a huge part of the game, and it wasn't all that satisfying. Games like F.E.A.R. that allow you to pin people to the wall with nail-bullets and things like that have a neat hook to them. The dismemberment got old for me pretty quickly and turned into just mindless killing after a while.
I was also a little disappointed with how linear the game is, but again I haven't gotten all the way through it so I can't tell whether it remains that way or not.
If I were to rate it, I'd give it an 8.5/10.

I do have to admit though, I didn't find it terribly frightening. It was certainly tense, however--especially when something was chasing me and I was waiting for the darn door to open!

The production value is through the roof, and the gameplay is perfect. That's why I found it really surprising when I saw this on a list of the ten most disappointing games of 2008 two days ago, given that no one was expecting anything out of it and it turned out to be so good.

Have you played Dead Space yet? What did you think of it?

I've just about beat the game, on Chapter 12. I have to admit that this title came out of no where from EA. They haven't really made that many good games as of late, so when I first heard about Dead Space from EA Redwood Shore, I didn't really know what to expect. However, as soon as it was announced, I've kept a close eye on the game until its release on October 14, 2008. Probably due to the fact that it's a survivor-horror game and I'm a huge fan of the genre.
So, I'm gonna get right down to it.. Dead Space is an amazing game, it's really as simple as that. It may not win any awards, because of the kind of game it is, but it is easily one of the best survivor-horror games in the past 10 years. The story/characters really draw you in. The gameplay sets itself apart from other games of its kind.
Dead Space has to be one of the scariest games I've ever played. The way the creatures just drop out of no where, the way everything is set up, you don't expect things to happen, then they do, etc.
Have you played Dead Space yet? If so, what did you think of it? If not, then definitely pick it up(not a rental, but a MUST BUY).

I played through it about a month ago and really enjoyed it. I thought the limb-dismemberment angle was fresh and interesting and I really enjoyed finding the audio/text logs as I pieced together what happened to the Ishimura. I was quite impressed that EA actually put out a new IP and supported it so strongly. I do have to admit though, I didn't find it terribly frightening. It was certainly tense, however--especially when something was chasing me and I was waiting for the darn door to open!

I found the game to be very boring and predictable. Actually, I wrote a very detailed review of Dead Space around the time that I finished it: http://www.stephsblog.info/games/dead-space-review/
