I believe what you are referring to is the ability to save your place in a level, start an alternate level, then coming back to your save point in the first level at a later time.
I've run into this problem when wanting to play a level while not wanting to lose my progress in the original mission. Unfortunately, there's no way to do that. The only thing you can do is use the "Save and Exit" option when you press start in-game. Which saves your current checkpoint in the misson. You can come back to that checkpoint at a later time by using the "Resume" option in the main menu.

In the single-player campaign, the game automatically saves at every checkpoint during a mission and it saves again when you complete a mission. If you exit the game and select "Resume Game," you will start at the beginning of your last mission. Any progress you made into the mission is lost. You cannot save in two player co-op.
