Is the original Rock Band game worth getting if you just bought Rock Band 2?
The instruments are backwards compatible I assume?

I assume you have a 360 and not the Wii or PS2 version. This information is only confirmed for the XBox 360
You should be able to pick up the original rock band for under $20 on eBay or $30 at GameStop. Not only are the controllers backward compatible but you will be able to play all of the songs in the original Rock Band within Rock Band 2. The only down side to this is that you have to load them onto your 360's hard drive.
If there are a lot of songs on the old version that you want to play, then yes, it would be worth it. However, the longer you wait, the lower the price for the used software will be. It is also possible that you will get tired of the game before you move on to some of the original songs.

Whatever gaming system you have, getting the first Rock Band is a must. The instruments are backwards compatible, and even compatible with Guitar Hero World Tour. Have fun!
Yes, all of the instruments are compatible between the two games, although some peripherals will loose functionality (like the velocity sensitive drum pads). And no, it's not really worth it, basically the only reason to get RB 1 would be as a song pack, you can transfer all of the songs over to RB 2 (at least, you can on the xbox 360). So if you find a really cheap copy of RB 1, then you can buy it, export the songs, and load them into RB 2 (this costs $5 in addition to the cost of both games, but it gives you all the RB 1 songs other than Run for the Hills and Enter Sandman in RB 2)
