Xbox 360 Elite HD-DVD player issue?

I happen across a really good deal on a factory refurb Xbox 360 HD-DVD player. Hooking everything up was not a problem and I now get HD-DVD playback with great image quality but there is a small problem... While the HD-DVD is playing there are random cuts to black (just about a frame or two in lenth) and it goes back to playing without a problem only to do it again.

Is this an issue with the player? A connection problem? Could it be the disc (I currently only have Planet Earth in HD-DVD and I know this does cut from progressive to interlaced throughout but I am not sure if the black cuts happen to be at these moments or not).

Any thoughts, ideas or similar issues? I know HD-DVD is a format that lost the war but the price was right for a High Def option (plus HD-DVDs are only $3 or $4 on Amazon so it is cheap to buy a bunch of movies in this format).

Make sure you have updated the firmware on the Xbox360 as well as the HD-DVD add-on drive. I remember when we first got our drive the first thing that the XBOX required was a firmware update to enable its use...proper use.

When I connected the drive the xbox said it was ready to use without any software installation but did request an update, which I did. As far as I can tell the firmware is as up to date as it can be (though my thought was perhaps there is a firmware available which I would need to burn to a CD/DVD to install if Microsoft doesn't support any longer)

Picked "no best answer" since there wasn't an answer that was outside of the box and fixed the problem. For giving it a shot I am sending you a tip anyways, Thanks!!

Buying refurbished has it's flaws at times. I don't think microsoft made this component to black out. An exchange (with in store testing) can resolve.

The purchase was done through an online vendor, so in store testing is not possible.

I'm aware an exchange is an option but I want to cover all options before going that route.

Xbox360 DVD drive is not the best in the world, just do a search for how many people complain about xbox360 not detecting xbox360 games. I have to purchase a new one because the hold one wasn't reading my games at times. Now I have to deal with flashing the drive which I don't even know how to. I personally think the drive is not worth the money from the start, doesn't matter if it's hitachi or toshiba or any other drives. See if you can play porn on it, usually porn has less quality and you'll fall asleep during all the way so it's all good.

I'm having no problems with the Xbox360 DVD drive, in fact the brand new Elite I just purchased works great for all my games and DVDs (loads things fast compared to the 1st gen 360 I use to have)... My issue, as I clearly stated in the question, is with the HD-DVD addon drive which has nothing to do with games...
