How did you get started as a freelance writer?

If you are a freelance writer, I'd love to hear how you got started, including for example where you started, how you got your early breaks, and what rates you were getting. For extra brownie points, you can share how your career has evolved since then, how your rates have changed etc.

Do not answer this question if you are not personally a freelance writer, as you would definitely be off topic!

I got started after reading an advert in my local daily newspaper and the title screamed "Be A Freelance Writer Earn One Million In One Year", while you train from home(NB-The one million is in Kenya Shillings ,Kshs ),$1=77.85 Kshs, I decided to check it out it was the Writers Bureau of journalism ,Headquartered in Manchester U.K.

The deal was they send you material with a fortnight's full refund guarantee if you found the material not upto scratch. Suffice to say I enrolled and I am on the 15th lesson of the freelance journalism course. So far I have recovered the cost I invested in paying for the long distance course . Initially I targeted the print media writting supplements and advertorials and stringing, the pay seldom exceeded $50 i,e some Kshs 4000.
But now my writing is evolving towards writing for online publications,websites,e-zines and blogs where I reckon the pay might be much better, actaully for the short space of time I have been writing for Associated Content and Personal money store my income from freelancing has increased almost fourfold. I am optimistic that this new media is where the future is headed.

Interesting story!

I thought on Associated Content people only made a a couple of dollars per article. Are you getting a lot more than that?

Had a look at Personal Money Store. Those guys are buying 10 articles a day to drive traffic to their site. I can't imagine how much money they must be making for that to be worthwhile! Very nice for someone.
