Can you help improve the poetry aspects of my "Twas the Night Before Christmas" Letter?

The following is our annual Lorenzen Family Christmas Letter based on the Twas the Night Before Christmas poem. I'd like your help improving the poetry aspects of the content that we've written about. Please go through it and make any suggestions that you think will improve the piece.

TWAS THE DAY
BEFORE CHRISTMAS

by Lee & Julie Lorenzen

Twas the day before Christmas,
when we left the house

Our plan was to go shooting,
but not at a mouse.

Five shot guns we took
from the gun rack with care,

In hopes of success
we were loaded for bear.

Grown children were with us,
not snug in their beds,

For visions of sporting clays
danced in their heads.

And mom in her long scarf,
and I in my CAL cap,

Had just gathered our kids
for some fun shooting trap.

When out on the range,
two skeet started to scatter,

I shot the former,
Julie blasted the latter.

Nate, Matt and Emily
their muzzles did flash,

Tore clays into shatters
that fell with a crash.

Our first try at this sport,
we gave it a go

And got back a thrill
that was more than you know.

In case you’re wondering
if Santa should fear,

There’s no need to worry,
we don’t shoot at reindeer.

Though we cling to our guns,
One man we won’t knock,

You’ll know in a moment,
his name is Barack.

More plainly than pundits,
he said “Yes We Can!”

As he cajoled and coaxed,
we called him our man!

"While Katie, the Kouric,
called Palin a vixen!

We Vetted! We Voted!
Obama was blitzen,

To the press, To the polls,
To the crowds, We would call:

Vote Change Today! Change Today!
Change Today All!"

As the stock market fell,
it made many men cry,

That McCain’s hopes ended
there, no one will deny.

Next up to the House,
the car CEOs flew,

With their jets full of perks and
their palms open too.

And then, in a twinkling,
confidence went poof!

The market down-turning
kept buyers aloof.

As Roosevelt once said,
we must not be afraid,

In the new year, God willing,
our fears will soon fade.

Julie read by the fire,
warmed right down to her toes,

When the tales were all finished,
this much she knows,

Her favorite book
is one she won’t give back,

Twilight told of Bella,
Edward and a wolf pack.

Nathans at Berkeley!
He keeps his life merry!

He majored in stats,
which I find quite scary.

He has about
a semester to go,

And he spends his free time
playing water polo.

Lee’s start-ups survived
by the skin of their teeth,

Their true worth still hidden
like a sword in its sheath.

But they have plans,
worthy of Machiavelli,

To shake the World Wide Web
from here to New Delhi!

Gunner, Grady and Val,
prove three dogs beat one elf,

For they give great gifts
that you can’t put on a shelf!

A wink of their eye
and a twist of their head,

Allow you to know
you have nothing to dread.

God’s gifts to this world
since He started His work,

Include all our blessings,
plus one added perk:

When we have great worries
(yes, including those),

We can pray for peace
from His Son who arose!

We drop to our knees,
there is no need to whistle,

Away fly our fears
as on the tip of a missile.

For we heard Him exclaim,
‘ere He rose out of sight,

"Fear not for I’m with you
in the day and the night!”

This is a fun and lovely way to update your friends and family about your take on this year! I hope I have helped your content shine through.

I made some mostly minor tweaks to help it scan better and for accuracy, which I have noted by putting an asterisk at the end of every line I altered (sorry if I missed any.) I put a note explaining the times I felt I was doing more than a minor change, or at least something less obvious. Those notes are parenthetical and appear after the relevant line, and thus make the poem look less lovely right now as they mess up stanzas -- they are easily removed, though, and at least one contains an alternate option for the line you might prefer.

I also changed the formatting a bit to help your reader follow you through this wonderful poem.

I put it in stanzas because the versions of the original I found utilized stanzas and it makes it easier to follow, especially in the second part where you have a stanza for each family member. You don't need transitions if you have the like-lines lumped together.

I put it in two parts because it seemed to me their are two distinct parts: one that flows from hunting to politics, and then another that flows from family to the religious importance of Christmas. There wasn't a clear transition from FDR to Julie by the fire, and you don't need one if you designate the two parts. This also helps your reader.

I would be happy to discuss any of these changes via comment or Direct Question. Again, congratulations on this creative way to share your year and thoughts with friend's and family this season.

"While Katie, the Couric,/ said 'Palin's a vixen!'")
We Vetted! We Voted! Obama was blitzin', *(I assume you mean "blitzing" like http://dictionary.reference.com/search?q=blitzing "an intense campaign," and not to call him the reindeer so this will help clarify)
To the press, To the polls, To the crowds, We would call:
Vote Hope Today! Hope Today! Hope Today All!" *(I changed it to hope not because the other message wasn't great -- it was! -- but I think this is more lyrical. Say "Vote Change Today, Change Today, Change Today All!" out loud -- the repeated "ch--" is grating, which is obviously not what you are going for. "Hope" has a softer sound, similar to the "dash" in the original.)

I started before realizing that this was much too long for me to do. However, I might as well give you my start. Essentially, I feel that you should take more care with how it scans, counting the number of syllables per line and their cadence:

Twas the day before Christmas, when we left our house.
Our plan, go a-hunting, but not after a mouse.

Our shotguns brought down from our gun rack with care,
In hopes of success we were loaded for bear.

Our children were with us, not snug in their beds,
For visions of sporting clays danced in their heads;

Mom wrapped in her long scarf, I wore my CAL cap,
We gathered our kids for some fun shooting trap.

I thought this was very well done!
Anything I added is in parentheses, and if there are empty parentheses its because I removed a word or two.

I tired to see if I could fix the rhythm in a few places, and I changed a few of the rhyming worlds.

Again, amazingly done!

I thought it was great! Rather than having it edited, I changed it up a little. Hopefully you like some of the revised version. Check out my revised version below, and enjoy!

Twas the day before Christmas,
my spouse and I left the house.

With a plan to go shooting,
yet not the innocent mouse.

Twas five shot guns in hand,
from the gun rack in demand,

We hoped for success
just loaded for bear.

Our children all grown,
not snuggling in their beds,

Our visions of sporting clays
danced in their heads.

With mom in her long scarf,
and I in my CAL cap,

We just gathered our kids
for some fun shooting trap.

When out on the range,
two skeet started to scatter,

My shot hit the former,
Julie blasted the latter.

Nate, Matt and Emily
their muzzles did flash,

Tore clays into shatters
that fell with a crash.

For this first try at this sport,
we gave it our go

We were rewarded with thrill,
more knowledge than you can spill

If you should wonder,
if Santa should fear,

Have no worries,
we don't shoot at reindeer.

It's our guns we cling to,
One leader we won't knock,

You'll see in a moment,
his name is Barack.

More plainly than pundits,
he declared "Yes We Can!"

As he cajoled and coaxed,
we made him our man!

"While Katie, the Kouric,
called Palin a vixen!

We Vetted! We Voted!
Obama was blitzen,

From the press, to the polls,
To the crowds, We would clamor:

"Vote Change Today! Change Today!
Change Today All!"

As the stock market fell,
it made many of us cry,

That McCain's hopes ended
quickly, no one will deny.

Next up to the House,
the car CEOs flew,

Their jets were all decked out,
their palms open too.

Within a twinkling,
confidence went poof!

The market down-turning
kept buyers aloof.

As Roosevelt once said,
we must not be afraid,

In the new year, God willing,
our fears will fade.

Julie read by the fire,
warmed from her head to toes,

When the tales were all finished,
this much she knows,

Her favorite book
it's one she won't give back,

Twilight told of Bella,
Edward and a wolf pack.

Nathans at Berkeley!
He keeps his life merry!

that you can't put on a shelf!

Allow you to know in dashes
you have nothing to dread.

God's gifts to this world

I'm a creative writing student and have taken many workshops. However, I didn't want to change your context around since it's a personal poem, so I altered some wording, tried to make fix the rhyming and pace...hopefully these work! It's very cute by the way. Merry Christmas! :)

TWAS THE DAY
BEFORE CHRISTMAS
by Lee & Julie Lorenzen

Twas the day before Christmas, when we left the house,
We planned to go trap shooting, but not at a mouse.

Five shot guns we took from the gun rack with care,
savoring some venison, yet not an angry bear.

Grown children joined us, away from snug, cozy beds,
As thoughts of sporting clays swirled around in their heads.

Mom tucked in a long scarf and I the CAL cap I adore
As we led our children outside straight through the door.

We just wanted to spend time together, shooting trap
And blessedly all those critters fell right in our lap.

But then on the range two skeet started to scatter,
I focused on the former and Julie on the latter.

Nate, Matt and Emily their muzzles did flash,
Tore clays into shatters that fell with a crash.

In case you're wondering if Santa Clause had fear,
No need to worry, we didn't aim at his reindeer.

Though we cling to our guns, one man we won't knock,
The hope of America's future-- his name? Barack!

More plainly than pundits, he said "Yes We Can!"
As he spoke and inspired, we called him our man!

While Katie, the Couric, called Palin a vixen!
We Chose! We Voted! Obama was a-fix-in,

To the press, To the polls, To the crowds, Out we would call:
Vote Change Today! Change Today! Change Today For All!"

As the stock market crashed, it made many men cry,
Poor McCain's dreams ended there, this I cannot deny.

Next up to the White House, the car CEOs flew,
With their jets full of perks and their palms open too.

Then, with a slight jingle, their confidence went poof!
O, bruished little market, you kept buyers so aloof.

But as Roosevelt once said, we must not be afraid,
In the coming year, God willing, our fears will fade.

Julie read by the fire, warmed down to her toes,
With the tales all finished, this much she knows,

Her favorite book is one she definitely won't give back,
Twilight told of Bella, Edward and a powerful wolf pack.

Nathan's at Berkeley! He keeps his life merry!
He's majoring in stats, which I find quite scary.

He has approximately one college semester left to go,
And, in his free time, he loves a good game of water polo.

Lee's start-ups survived by the skin of their teeth,
Their worth still hidden like a sword in its sheath.

But Lee has plans, worthy of Machiavelli,
To shake the World Wide Web from here to New Delhi!

Gunner, Grady and Val prove three dogs beat one elf,
For they give true gifts that go beyond a store shelf.

A wink of their eye and a twist of their head,
Allow you to know you have nothing to dread.

God's gifts to this world since He started His work,
Include all our blessings, plus one added perk:

Though we have real worries (yes, including those),
We still pray for peace from His Son who arose!

We drop to our knees, there's no need to whistle,
Our fears disappear, as though cleansed by mistle.

For we heard Him exclaim, 'ere He rose out of sight,
"Fear not for I'm with you in the day and the night!"
