Self-publishing is becoming more popular as time progresses. However, many think of Lulu the first time you want to self-publish your book.
Lulu is not the most recommended self publisher on the internet. Although it is the most popular - it is not exactly the best.
I would recommend Blurb (http://www.blurb.com). Blurb is a software which you can download the software - and create photobooks, cookbooks, blog books, wedding books, etc.
Blurb's software has preset templates which you can easily edit - much easier than Lulu. It also has the Blurb Bookstore in which you can upload your books to a community store which other people can purchase and you can gain profit as well.
The quality of the books are beautiful and the price to purchase the book is cheap. In fact, the software is free and when you create the book - purchasing it is optional.

This is one of the key features that I have found on Lulu. They will list your book on Amazon.com and on your own Lulu.com storefront. This way you can setup your own shop which you can link from your website, and it will also list it on Amazon.com, providing a link to a potentially vastly larger audience. I am not saying your answer is not good, I am just simply curious because I will be self publishing this year as well.
