Would you vote for Oprah for the Noble Peace Prize, if that were an option?

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

No. While Oprah is a philanthropist, and does alot for people, I do not agree with her politics or her belief system. It's interesting to me that many people who are 100% against any big corporation, LOVE Oprah Winfrey. Her companies are big corporations. She's EXTREMELY wealthy. Yes she does give, but so does almost every other wealthy American. Most people give quieter than she does tho. Much of her giving is an open display, which leads me to believe that she is looking for the noteriety. Maybe she's TRYING to get a Nobel Peace Prize, I dont know. Either way, I do not believe shes in it for "peace." I think she's in it for Oprah. That doesn't deserve a prize.

I agree that Arafat is also a poor selection for Nobel winner. Hopefully nobody thinks I am comparing Oprah to Pol Pot or Yasser Arafat. My point is that the prize itself has become a meaningless (how did you put it?) political popularity tool. Yes! Thats exactly what it is! Thats why I dont really care who wins it anymore.
As far as voicing the other comment I had prepared, well, I'll keep it. Everything I was about to say really doesn't matter if I dont care about the prize anyway.
I had written a fairly long response, but changed my mind.
The Nobel Peace Prize lost all crediblity last year. They can give one posthumously to Pol Pot for all I care.
Thanks for the discussion!
What about Oprah efforts to alleviate suffering for women in the Congo?
Has Oprah help to alleviate suffering and for that effort should she be given the "Noble Peace Prize" despite her political, social, or religious views. Give her the prize for what she had done.
List the last five individuals who received the Nobel Peace Prize and what they did to deserve the prize.
Your should post your criticism. This is a competitive arena for ideas, so the criticism is helpful for the reader. The opinions should be objective.
I think the Nobel Peace prize has degraded from the original intent into a political popularity tool.
Pol Pot selection to Nobel Peace Prize would be equivalent to Yasser Arafats, neither one a good choice, in my opinion.
Self interest drives ever human being. Bill Gates uses self interest to spend interest money from his trust. Thousands of organizations pitch ideas to Mr. Gates each year. Gates is very politically influential. Oprah uses her fame to gain a voice. Oprah is more recognized than Ghandi, in my opinion. Her self interest is to bring about change in Congo through education and social awareness. Oprah has my vote.
