Would you take it as an insult if someone called you silly?

Tip for best answer: M$1.50
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

It would really depend on who was calling me silly.

Depending on the tone and inflection, it could be an insult or a compliment.

I grew up in a comedic family and we all clowned around at times.

I have noticed that through the years, people tend to use that word as more of an insult than a compliment. The dictionary uses words like 'foolish' or 'goofy' to describe someone who is 'silly'.

I have also noticed that when I have been labeled as 'silly', people have a harder time taking what I say as serious. It almost implies that you can't be both, you have to pick one and stay that way.

Monty Python has often used the word 'silly' in their characters and skits. They state that something or someone is 'silly' and imply it as an insult, but at the same time what is deemed 'silly' is the focus of all the humor.

The next time someone calls me 'silly', I would ask them "Is that a compliment or are you asking me out on a date?"

Depends on the context...

Silly can be a good thing, or it can be a slap in the face.

The word "silly" to me means to do something pointless and amusing, so no I would not take offence is someone called me silly. Especially if it were after I had done something "silly" to entertain or amuse.

I would however be offended it someone called me stupid, that is a whole different issue.

I wouldn't. I consider myself pretty silly because i'm the type of person who loves to hear laughter, and to be able to give people a reason to laugh. I love being goofy/silly/hilarious it makes me happy to do so.

Cointenly Not! Some of the most famous people have been dubbed as SILLY. Lucille Ball, Bob Hope, The Three Stooges, The Smother Brothers, Abbot and Costello, - and the list is never ending. Cointenly I would not mind to be in their company.

Silly is better than sad. Being called sad would worry me cuz if it's that obvious I have a problem. But to be silly, you just have to be happy - or at least a little unique!

Well, my idea of 'silly' is doing something I really should have realized wasn't a good idea :) Silly is not being 'stupid' as such, just not being thoughtful or paying attention.

I wouldn't really be offended if I had done something silly and someone said "how silly!" they would just be reminding me to be a more thoughtful person....

I would be offended if they said that to me all the time, especially if they knew I was really trying my best! I would be offended if they meant to hurt me too, if they knew I had tried my best but not enough for them :(

It does depend on you and the circumstances but I've been called silly before and I'm sure its not going to be the last time!

So not really insulted by a word like that.

If I were to answer this question, this is how I would answer it. Being silly sometimes is okay. But as a general overall characteristic, I wouldn't want to be called a silly person. Doing silly and being silly are different.

Last night I spent 2 hrs. typing a very long answer to add to my remarks to kty2777. Unfortunately because of the time change and the fact that I was working with my iphone, I think my answer was not posted in this answer box. Mahalo actually locked me out and acted as if I was not a member. It would not recognize me as a member and I even tried to log in through Facebook, and still Mahalo would not allow me to post my answer. I was pretty upset because I had stayed up until 3:00am working on it. The reason I was working on my iphone instead of my computer is that I have back problems and I had to lie down to work. Now I know not to use my iphone. Lesson learned.
