Would you still respect authors who write erotica?

Many erotica writers use pseudonym to avoid being recognized in real life. Do you think we should disrespect people who write erotica or even porn?

Many writers in general write under a pseudonym to avoid being recognized in real life or as in the case of others, to write in a style different than what they are known for. I have the utmost respect for any writer, even more so for one who can write good erotica. If you've ever tried it you'll realize just how hard it is to write a convincing erotic story.

I'm not much of a writer, but I do photograph erotica and display my work in galleries all over the US. Many times I will operate under a pseudonym because I work as a children's photographer by day and would lose my job otherwise. If the parents of the children I photograph knew what I did on my weekends off I would never have another customer. The photos I create aren't trashy, they aren't porn, but many people look at those interested in erotica as oddities or as sick and I think that mindset is completely uncalled for.

Of course! I belong to a Romance Divas forum and the majority of them write erotic romances. I've even thrown around the idea of trying it myself. It's not as easy as it sound. They tell hilarious stories about when they were writing their first love scenes they kept looking over their shoulders afraid someone was going to catch them. :)

Hell no!! Why should one disrespect someone because their views are different from ours? If I didn't like romance stories would it be fair if I disrespected the author? Everyone needs to be respected.

But those who appeal to higher instincts need to be respected much more.

I don't understand your answer. It seems contradictory. When you said Hell, no, do you mean we shouldn't respect erotica authors or do you think you should respect erotica authors? You said everyone needs to be respected, but you said those who appeal to higher instincts need to be respected more?

Sure, if the erotica is good. I respect writers based on the quality of their writing and of their vision. Period. And sex is just as legitimate a topic as any for writing, so why should it make any difference?

I think a lot of the stigma is because there's a whole lot of horrific erotica out there. Even by good writers. It's the reason the Bad Sex in Fiction "awards" exist:

http://www.guardian.co.uk/books/2009/nov/30/bad-sex-award-jonathan-littell-kindly-ones (not really safe for work!)

When you're in that company, it's natural -- if not right -- that erotica writers get judged!

I Absolutely feel that they deserve respect!

This is a part of human feeling and experience. If anything they deserve a great deal of respect for daring to tread into the taboo.

Only if they wrote good erotica. I think Laurel K Hamiliton's books are a good example of erotica gone wrong. She started off her Anita Blake series with a kick ass heroine that occasionally had really good sex with vampires and werewolves. A fun read.

However, her books are now so filled with erotica that the plot has essentially disappeared. She throws some in when she allows her main character to get out of bed, which isn't often in the last six or so books. I pretty much gave up on the series when this happened because it got boring to read. Sadly, she still produces these books because someone (or many someones) are still reading them - just not me.

Interesting question. Though I have to say I don't read anything as much as I used to due to a toddler running around, and I normally don't read erotica unless it happens to be packaged with a novel I'm already reading. But I guess good for me is a healthy balance of plot and sex rather than just one sex scene to another. I should probably check it out more hehehehe

I'm sure for many authors, their erotica under their pseudonym is actually how they make most of their money, enabling them to support themselves while they write their more meaningful books. Personally, I would say they're entitled to write whatever they want, and so long as they produce books that I do want to read, I will buy their non-erotica, and be grateful that they are able to produce their other books.

I'm sure it's hard to make a living as a writer, so I say more power to them!
