Would you pay your rent online if you could?

Would your landlord tolerate or appreciate such audaciousness? Is this idea too sci-fi or is it just something that people will eventually all do in the future? Maybe you already pay online!? If so, I'd like to hear about it.

Cheers!

I wish I could pay my rent online! I live in a complex, and the office is rather distant from my building, so I usually have to make a big circle on my way home to drop off my check in the rent box. My boyfriend pays rent to a landlord rather than a management company, so we have to make a special trip by the landlord's house to drop the payment in his mail slot every month. I think management companies should already be considering this option, as many people do pay all their other bills online (between utilities, cell phone, and credit cards, almost everything I pay monthly is online). It may be harder to get the ball rolling with private landlords, but sites such as PayPal may make this "sci-fi" vision a reality. I think it would probably cut down on late payments, as I know I'm likely to pay bills at all hours of the night, when I'm not too keen on hopping in the car to deliver a paper check. Also, I have an online bank account that doesn't even provide paper checks (they'll mail them for you if necessary), so I have to keep two checking accounts so that I have an account to write my rent checks from! I bet there are some companies or landlords that have already seen the benefits of offering online payment, but I don't think I'm going to have access to that luxury anytime soon.

I wouldn't think that it's uncommon. If you have or can get your landlord's bank details then it is certainly an option. A previous landlord of mine gave me his details so that I could set up a standing order / direct debit, but there were times during my leasing period that I made a straight deposit to his account using my bank's on-line banking service

The idea of PayPal or similar payment methods might not be quite as common, but if it happens to be an agreeable option for both parties involved, then there is no reason why it could not be utilised.

I guess you should just talk it through . . .

Well, I am paying my rent online and I really love it; it is very convenient for me because you do not need to go somewhere; just pay when ever you want; at night, at day time, at the kitchen or in bedroom. Usually it takes 2-3 minutes and everything is done. :)

I had no other choice but to pay my rent online. I actually chose to use direct deposit into my rental company's account. Took a bit to set it all up but I am never late with my rent. Plus I do not have to buy checks anymore. I pay everything online. Saves trees and money on stamps. :)

It would be nice to have that option, but writing a check only takes a minute and it is not that big of a deal to me.

I can and choose not to because there's a "convenience" fee of almost $70 to pay in any way but a check handed to the front office of my apartment complex.

It's pretty backwards but then again this IS florida...
