Would you know how to skydive, if you were in Daniel Pharr's situation?

Daniel Pharr received a skydiving experience from his girlfriend as a Christmas present. He had never skydived before. He was tied to a skydiving teacher, George Steele, during the experience, but the teacher died during the dive, most likely from a heart attack. Pharr steered the two of them down to the ground. Sadly, Steele was later pronounced dead, but Pharr survived. He said he knew how to skydive from watching TV. Skydiving experts say he could have done several things wrong that would have jeopardized his life. If you were in the same situation, would you know how to skydive?

I sincerely hope that I would have had the presence of mind to take control of the situation like Mr. Pharr did.

I think that, perhaps, I would be able to steer the parachute in a similar situation. I know from TV and movies that there are those hand toggles used to steer the chute, and I'd probably start gently to see how my actions would affect the parachute's trajectory.

I would also say that tandem jumpers should get a brief tutorial on how to steer if an emergency comes up in the future. Just some guidelines if they are required to step in, even though that situation is rare.

I kind of doubt it...I've gotta believe his army training came in handy. I'd like to think that since I would have already watched a training video, and the chute had already been successfully deployed, that I would have been able to steer us down to safety, but apparently there are a lot of things he could have done wrong in the process. So my answer -- hopefully, but very likely not!
