Would you have traded in your Maserati Clunker?

One Colorado man had trouble selling his rare 1985 Maserati as it had engine trouble. After several months, he traded it in using the Cash for Clunkers program, receiving $3,500, roughly what he was asking for the car. Despite having a near-mint interior and exterior, the car will be crushed.

Would you have done the same thing, knowing the beautiful car would be crushed?

I would not have done this. He could have put some effort in to fixing the engine and then sold it to a collector. I am sure there is somebody who would have been willing to buy it for 3,500 even with the bad engine and definitely for more with a working engine. Bottom Line: I feel this guy just didn't look hard enough for a buyer.

I completely agree with you on this one. With some engine work, that Maserati would not have been a Clunker. Just because the guy in Colorado didn't appreciate the car enough to try to fix it doesn't mean that someone else wouldn't have.

I am actually shocked that this did not command a better price than 3500. There are several locations that could have been tried that I'm sure weren't. eBay Motors alone would have driven his price well above his initial asking price for a relatively minimal investment.

I must say people are not buying old cars as much as they used to. With the economic downturn, the rise of gas prices, people do not want to buy a car that will eat up tons of gas and that will be expensive to maintain.
I might sadly sacrifice my 1991 Jeep Cherokee (only 110k miles, and runs great!! Just ran 500 miles straight twice going 80 mph (speedometer only goes up to 85). I hate seeing the car go as I love it, it is far from a collectors edition car or anything but it just has emotional value to me. Gas prices are pushing me to sell it as well, because at 60$ a fill, and a fill only lasting 380 miles, it gets expensive.

Exotic cars are extremely expensive to maintain, with simple things like tires costing thousands of dollars (if you can even find tires at all). If the car has gotta go, it's gotta go and if no one else was willing to take the burden from this man, then crush away. Seriously: If someone offered you a broken Maserati for $4,500 right now and you absolutely knew you could not sell it, would you take it? Got space in your garage? In your yard maybe? Put it up on concrete blocks?
