Would you ever want to work in the financial sector?

There seems to be a growing populist streak to vilify all of those who work in the financial field. I was just curious if anybody would admit to having a desire to work in the field, even though you could be broad stroked as a "mean" and "uncaring" opportunist.

Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

I'm really glad you asked this question! I was actually thinking about this on my own the other day. While my business operations are not primarily in the financial sector at this point (just some light activity here and there), I think it will move more in that direction over time. I have no problem working in the financial sector at all. Learning about the industry is time consuming and only a small percentage of the general public really has any idea what goes on. Most people who vilify financiers aren't even aware of how they make their living, never mind what constitutes ethical vs. unethical behavior.

In my opinion, finance is one of the most interesting industries you can take part in. Who cares what the general public thinks? Regardless of which industry makes you rich, the public will always be offended when they see your Rolls Royce. Reality doesn't matter to them -- only perception.

I would think you are talking about working for trading firms, Banks and such. I already have and I loved it. Most people don't really know what a derivative is or how they could profit from it. It is a great game and that's what it is a game with alot on the line. Most people don't realize a floor broker has about five years to make his money and after that he burns out. If he does good he moves up to management. This is a 24 hour a day job as yoyu follow the markets around the World and wait for yours to open. I really don't care what the public perception is as the public is not paying my bills. If you have the head for numbers and can think quick on your feet and multitask then it's an interesting career with good rewards.

Never, just because I know how immoral they are. People who get rich trading are usually the most unscrupulous ones. I wouldn't want to work around that kind of people all day.

Nope. Just sounds like a boring career to me. Life already forces us to deal with money in our own households, why make it a job to boot?
