Would you ever spend real money to play an online game in Facebook like Farmville or MouseHunt?

You can make quite a bit of progress by spending a few dollars to buy the things you need in-game rather than saving up through hard work. Is this something you'd ever consider doing? Do you think it's a good value?
Tip for best answer: M$1.00
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

Would I pay money for FarmVille or similar applications? Absolutely not. I don't play them and I sure as hell won't support them, because the CEO of Zynga -- the company behind most of these games -- is an admitted scammer. I refuse to give him money.

I'm not opposed, though, to paying for online games that are good. In fact, I've done this a few times for ones I play often and support. The difference is quality. There really isn't much strategy in FarmVille and its ilk; it's just a finely honed way to waste time. It's just a slapdash cash grab for Zynga. But other game developers actually care about their product, and I have no problem rewarding them.

No.

I don't even play those ridiculous things. They have no purpose. I understand the concept of spending money on entertainment, but the concept of paying money to progress in a game that has no ending is beyond me.

Once, my friend spent lots of money on playing World of Warcraft for buying WOW Gold and items.

I enjoyed the game for only a short while. When I started getting frustrated because everything I wanted was too much or not available until you use real money to purchase coins or XP points or whatever.

I only played it cuz it was free. Had they charged me in the first place, I would have never tried it.

No I wouldn't play these games as I think they are ridiculous. I have seen on the news that people actually get sucked into these games and start to think it is their real life. Some guy in Japan just married a woman in a video game-I mean the character they showed him saying I do's with a laptop. He said she never argued or was demanding or made him share his feelings. Go out and live a real life, it's much more productive.

I don't spend real money on those games. Spending real money for virtual merchandise is a bit wasteful to me. I'm sure some people just want to get ahead in the game but really if you get ahead too fast, then you lose the purpose and fun of the game. But really, those facebook games are all the same. After a while they all get to be chores or jobs for which I don't get paid for. I've stopped doing all of them in favor of more productive things like sitting outside on my deck in the sun or going to the park. Those games can really suck you in and before you know it, 2 hours have gone by and all you did was tend some virtual crops.

I'm sure many people have heard of this already but there is a Korean couple now in jail because they allowed their real baby to starve to death while they nurtured a virtual baby online (http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2010/03/05/couple-let-baby-starve-to_n_487287.html). Granted this is an extreme case of online gaming gone bad and most people would never get to this point. But it's an interesting case none the less for obsession with online games.

If you enjoy the game and it gives you pleasure then I see no reason to say no. I am not tempted to toss in real money because I am not that involved in the games. Even when I was playing non stop I wasn't tempted to pay real money for the upgrades.
