Would you ever have a pet snake?

I wouldn't! Ew! I know a lot of people do have them though, either because they love snakes or because an allergy prevents them from having a dog or cat. Snakes don't creep me out as much as fish do (double ew!), but it is close. I guess most snakes move so slowly though that the ew factor is reduced a bit. Also, most snakes are not poisonous, though constricters are worse, if you ask me!

No, I wouldn't have a pet snake, primarily because I don't have the desire (or the time) to learn and provide a suitable home for it. I believe it is the responsibility of every potential pet owner to learn about the animal, its needs and care requirements BEFORE brining the animal home. Bringing an animal home on a whim can cause too many problems and it is not fair to an animal to not treat it in a kind manner.

Besides responsibility, there is definitely an "ew" factor. Since many snakes require feeding of rats or other small animals, I know I wouldn't be able to properly feed the snake without being grossed out. I can barely cook raw meat without getting my stomach turning. If you you want to see how to feed a corn snake, check out the attached video.

Maybe, would depend on the kind and who was caring for it. If one of my sons wanted a snake and was doing the tank cleaning, sure. (reptile tanks are the worst!) I used to hate snakes, but I had a friend who had a little garter snake she brought to school and she talked me into holding it, i thought it was pretty cool actually got me over that inborn fear folks have of snakes.

I wouldn't want one like a boa that could hurt me poisonous or not, and personally myself I have no interest in one as a pet , but never know one of the kids might want one someday and tech. if it's in my house it's sort of my pet.

No, sure would not want to own a pet snake. I would be too afraid that it could view my tiny Pomeranian as lunch. I remember last year while my husband and I were out house-hunting to find a new home to purchase, we entered a foreclosure that still had all its then-current owner’s furniture and belongings present. I was particularly interested in the two extra bedrooms in the home, since those would have been my children’s rooms and so I quickly stormed the first one on the upper floor, located right next to the master bedroom. When we entered it, the room was dark with only a tiny red light shimmering on a wooden desk. As we strolled around the room, I suddenly heard a loud gasp and felt someone grip my shoulder for support. It was our realtor who had turned around to face a giant snake within a terrarium. The serpent was just lying there, staring at us and we quickly left the room. Well, it turned out that this snake was not the only surprise this house had in store for us. As we tried to view the basement, a tremendous Pitbull bounced against the door, which fell shut in our faces and we quickly left without putting in an offer. I think personally I draw the line at cute fuzzy animals for pets, such as kittens, dogs and guinea pigs. A bunny, maybe. A goldfish, yes. A snake? No, never. I could not bring myself to feed it the little, fuzzy creatures that I actually adore.

I wouldn't chose snakes as pet. This one is a big NO NO for me. They have unique requirements and should only be kept by those with the commitment to understand and meet their needs.

When choosing a snake, you are making a long term commitment - they can be expected to live longer than 20 years. You must be willing to feed prey animals to your snake (though frozen, pre-killed prey is the best choice), and you will probably have to devote some freezer space to frozen prey items (i.e. rodents). Snakes are very adept escape artists, so make sure you have an escape-proof tank, keeping in mind that snakes are persistent about finding and squeezing through any small gaps. Finally, as beautiful as they are, I strongly recommend against anyone keeping large constricting snakes or venomous snakes.

Here are several factors to consider, however, before purchasing a snake:

1. Fear: If you or a member of your family has a fear of snakes, don't assume that owning a snake will cure your phobia. It won't. Make certain that you and every member of your household is comfortable around snakes.

2. Eating habits: Snakes eat rodents, frogs, insects and other snakes. If you're not comfortable handling these items, it's best to consider another pet.

3. Size: Many snakes in the boa family grow up to 15 feet in length. You may bring home a cute 12 inch pet, but remember, this snake will mature and grow rapidly. You will need to provide a fairly large cage for your snake to grow in to.

I personally would never have a snake either. I can not even get close to a snake without getting the "Heebie Jeebies."

I guess there are some people out there that loves snakes, and I am not quite sure why, but to each his own.

I would rather have my dogs. They are cuddly and warm and seem to bring so much unconditional love into my life. I have English Bulldogs and each has their very own personality. They really believe they are kids and NOT dogs.

I remember a few years back there was a reptile show near my home and we had to pay $10 each to go in. There was 4 of us. My spouse, 2 kids and I. We were bored and thought we would check it out. I remember walking in and seeing people with their snake in their hands. Everyone had their reptile, NOT in cages but holding them. It was wall to wall packed. We hurried to the exit and left. Took all of about 40 seconds and out the door we went and wasted $40.

When I was younger and had the time I woiuld have had a snake. Most likely a constrictor or a viper. But I no longer have the time for this. I did have a large piranha tank back in the day and large african cichlids. But this is something maybe I could do again in my retirement years if I can still move.

I never owned a pet snake personally, but I might as well have. My son got a snake when he was 15 years old and of course he kept it at the house. My husband and I recently had divorced and my son had begged and begged for a darn snake and I finally gave in. We decided on a corn snake after much research and discussion.

We got the aquarium, substrate, water dish and a wooden branch along with a heating pad for the bottom of the aquarium. We got it all set up and made sure the temperature was right and then went shopping. We ended up with a tiny corn snake and I have to admit, never being a person that likes snakes, he was adorable. My son did fine with taking care of him and even going to get the mice for food and feeding him. He kept it in his room and as long as I didn’t have to clean it or feed it, I was fine. My son brought it out every once in awhile so I could see him grow but it was no big deal.

This snake seemed to live forever. My son took a job as a truck driver when he was 24 years old. Well of course he couldn’t take the snake with him, so guess who had to take care of him. Me!! So for the next three years I fed him, watered him and took care of him. I have to admit that I didn’t mind talking to him, feeding him and watering him, but I never took him out once after my son went on the road. I felt sorry that he wasn’t paid more attention but that was all I could do. The snake finally died last year and as far as I’m concerned, that is the end of snakes in my house. I’ll just stick to dogs and leopard geckos. :-)

I used to have corn snakes. My male was a little thicker than the diameter of a 50 cent piece, and my female was probably only as big around as a quarter. The male could actually cut your air off if he got around your neck and got scared by something, but it was easy to unwrap him. Corn snakes are not constrictors, but all snakes like to feel secure when climbing.

I didn't particularly like feeding them, though I always gave them pre-killed mice. It was more the unpleasant smell that I didn't like.

Overall I think snakes can be neat pets, but they have no personality. They also require the use of heating devices, which can be a fire hazard in your home (I live in an area with earthquakes and it was pretty scary knowing that heating lamp was laying on the carpet following a good shake).

I ended up giving them away when I moved, which didn't particularly bother me, even though I'm the kind of person who could never give away a dog or cat. Like I said, they have no personality. I would probably not get snakes again, and I would never consider owning a large constrictor, for safety reasons (and because I have cats!), but I understand why people own them. Some people are just "snake people."

I would never own a pet snake. I don't particularly like them, which I guess is a good enough reason not to buy one on its own. However, I also don't particularly care for the stereotype. I know there are lots of nice and reasonable people who own them, but it just seems to me like such an "alternative" pet. I wonder if pet snake owners are more likely to get tattoos or body piercings than non-snake owners. It seems like the right pet to buy if you have a somewhat rebellious mindset. I'm also not sure I would ever want to trust a snake, but that's a whole other argument. Why won't a cat or dog do, or even a pet lizard? Maybe I just don't really understand.

Yes, I would have a snake for a pet. I did have one when I was in high school for a while. It was a small garden snake and I loved stroking it. It fascinated me that the snake was not 'slimey' as some would have wanted me to believe. I have no problem holding snakes....it's earthworms that I cannot stand to touch.

OMG, never, never, never would I ever own a snake. I don't think you could get me to walk up to a snake, touch a snake or stand in the same room with a snake that is not in a tank. I do think that some of them are pretty in still photographs like this coral snake, but there's just something about seeing that coiling motion live that makes me want to vomit. (I think it's because it reminds me of that scene from Raiders of the Lost Ark where the snake is slithering out of the skeleton's mouth.) And, don't get me started on the hissing. So, no, no snakes for me. If my kids ever ask for one, I'll say, "Sure! Get your own house and then we'll talk about it."

Eeewww NO! I hate snakes!

Humans innately have a fear of things that could hurt them-- that’s why a lot of people don't like spiders, bugs, snakes, and other creepy crawlies.

That said, I don’t like any of those things so I fit the common mold I guess. I have seen snakes and I’ve even touched one but to keep one as a pet would be something I just could not do. I would have nightmares of it creeping out of its aquarium and into my bed at night.

Also, the fact that you have to feed it mice (which I don’t like either). Even if they were pre-killed and frozen it would still freak me out. And if the mice are frozen wouldn’t you have to thaw it out? That is just gross!
