Tip for best answer: M$0.25

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

Hmm... the part about spreading the sushi-rice over the nori and then laying the fish on the rice, and then rolling the tube and cutting it into the bite-sized pieces could all be done with a well programmed robot with adequate sensory feedback, but the step of actually filleting the fish itself...

I think we have a way to go before we'll have a robot capable of filleting fish... that's a real craft, and would require a robot with multiple sensory inputs and quality judgment capacity on an AI level.

For now, I'd eat sushi where all parts were done by a robot except for the filleting of the fish... which means I wouldn't eat sashimi if it was made with current robot technology.

Japan is working on a robot cook. It can do simple cooking task. Robots can taste and smell. So mixing and chopping and combining is their current proficiency? However, that is due to change. Dumb robots is about to change,so open your imagination, the sky is the limit!

No, I would not. I think that Sushi is an art form, and I would not buy art from a robot. The best sushi comes from chefs who have been studying the art of making sushi for years and years, it is always a great treat to watch a great sushi chef engaged in his trade. I would get no joy from watching a robot do the same task.

I did build or actually re-build my own car, built my own engine, painted it, everything, and it is better than it was when new. You could teach robots to paint the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel, but it would not be the same. Do you just send your wife an email on her birthday, or do you buy a card, hand write a message in it and sign it, and personally hand it to her?

Cars were once hand crafted. You can buy a wood car that is handcrafted, today, from Europe, but why would you? The mass produced vehicles are much better. Would you buy a Rolls Royce, if you had the money?
