Would you consider Santa Monica a day trip or a place to spend your entire vacation week?
I enjoy museums and historic sites as well as amusement parks and putt putt golf. Family fun that would keep us entertained is necessary. So should we stay in a nearby city and visit Santa Monica or stay and see all the local color?

Santa Monica is actually a fairly contained area. Outside of the promenade, beach and the pier, there is little family entertainment near the downtown Santa Monica area. There are quite a few clubs, restaurants and art galleries in the area, but not too much to keep children entertained for very long. You could always plan a bike ride. Santa Monica actually has the longest beach path of its kind in the world!
Answering your question on beach quality: Outside of Will Rogers State Beach, Santa Monica beaches rate high as far as water and beach quality. Check out the weekly beach reports:

Things to consider:
- If you do stay somewhere else and intend to visit Santa Monica, be prepared for 2-3 hours of traffic each way. Highway 10 is horrendous.
- Outside of the promenade parking lot, there isn't much free parking.
