Would you celebrate being selected as giving the "best answer" if the rating were only 2 stars?
"Hi duenhsiyen,
Congrats! It's time to celebrate.
You earned 10 points for a best answer to the following question:
Who should I follow on Twitter for Parenting advice (or would be of interest to parents)? Suggest as many as you like.

The askers rating was two stars with the comment "I don't like that woman."
I wrote back: "Oooo. I had a five star rating before I answered this question! Ouch! I am going to be careful answering more questions from you! At least I tried answering. "
"Her response "haha, sorry! Maybe 2 stars was a little low. Don't worry one question won't effect that rating much in the long run."
Mine: "Maybe I can request that as a policy, Mahalo drop the lowest 10% of ratings, at least for newbies, as it might be discouraging. Or in light of your comment, allow users to revise their rating. Next time, better not to rate at all. I think that is an option. Maybe I will post a question about this."
And so I have. I still feel a little miffed and hurt because I would have liked more appreciation for at least answering. I was the only one to answer, and so with this experience, I have become a little more wary.
I do have a problem with the rating system using stars as rewards. I would rather people just leave comments as to how they felt about the answer, say pleased, overjoyed, or disappointed and just leave it at that. Often a question does not get much response. Perhaps as an alternative, a box indicating, "unable to rate because of insufficient response?"
Would anyone care to comment?
You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

I never really liked the star rating scale. I mean 3 out of 5 starts sounds bad, yet it is suppose to be selected for "good" answers. I think the ratings have a lot to do with how the answerer interprets the scale and how seriously they take the ratings system.

M$Voting and rating are so subjective and there is no way to tell how someone will rate you or if they will give reasons for unhelpful votes, so yes I believe you win. You have received the best answer nod, be proud and don't let the ratings or votes get you down just keep doing well and everything will work itself out. :)

M$The ratings really don't matter much over time unless you're consistently receiving low ratings, and they're rare - especially from Best Answers!
Yes, it's a bizarre case. But on a site like this everyone's ratings are subjective, and that's part of what we have to accept. Just the same as I feel there are many superb answers I've written that weren't chosen as Best Answer (were they crazy?), we must all bow to the whim of the gods of human chaos.
Go ahead and celebrate. You should feel proud that you DID receive a Best Answer, and not let it get under your skin. After all, it's not like The Scarlet Letter. No one here's going to tattoo two stars on your forehead after you fall asleep. Probably. ;D

yes, sometimes people rate answers as "that's great" and only leave the default star rating of 3 stars (good)
I've accidentally let 3 stars go after I click in 4 or 5 stars, by not pushing the button hard enough! (sorry!)
it's all numbers, and so is "best answer percentage"
it doesn't necessarily mean that answers are good or bad quality
you have to individually view all the answers to see what they are really like
