Would you be insulted if your prospective employer asked you to take a drug test?

Why?
Why not?

What if you didn't use drugs? How would you feel?

... secretly speaking I would not like it ... it seems like a privacy invasion ... but I do understand it is a requirement in places

and the last time I had drugs (besides acetominophen, ibuprofen and aspirin) was for a 1 day period after surgery, 10 years ago (eek morphine)

Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

Some companies do have drug testing as a requirement. I do not believe that I would be insulted. If I really wanted the job I would have no problem taking the test. I do not do drugs so it would not be a problem.

Companies usually have pre employment checks / tests that you must pass in order to be accepted in the position that you applied for. The employment application form that you sign usually states that when you sign you are agreeing that everything that you put on that form is the truth and you are also agreeing to any checks / tests they require. Your acceptance letter can also state the same requirement. They may not explicitly state that you will be drug tested but it falls under those tests you already agreed to. Sometimes these drug tests continue after you are already employed. Also, in some cases (not all) it is perfectly legal.

I cannot really fault the companies requiring drug testing. They are doing it to protect not only themselves but their other employees and customers. For instance if you work in a job where people's lives are in your hands, I think the company is well within their rights to make sure those people are safe.

If you don't do drugs, there is very little to worry about. If you do drugs then an employer has the right to know because of the possible effect on work perfomance, not to mention attendance.

If it bothers you that they want a drug test then maybe you should look for another job. No one is forcing anyone to take the job. A job at any company is at the discretion of the employer, not a right guaranteed without conditions.

I'd take a drug test daily. But I'd rather have the money they'd be wasting on the test added to my paycheck.

true
I am speaking theoretically because I run my own company
just theoretically that I believe it is a privacy right and there are so many people manipulating the tests these days, sad to say

It would bother me slightly, for the reason you have said. I would feel insulted, but as long as i hadnt done anything i would be ok
