Would the samsung syncmaster 2433 support a ps3 running 1080p?
I know some monitors support pixel mapping etc, I don't mind black borders on the screen I'm just wondering whether I can play the ps3 in 180p without too much distortion?

Yes the SyncMaster 2433 supports the PS3. I have the same combination with an DVI to HDMI cable. The monitor just needs to support HDCP and it does support it :)
