Would the iPad be beneficial for homeschool use?

I have a nine year old son that I homeschool and we are always looking for creative and fun ways to learn. Would the iPad be a beneficial addition to our curriculum? Could you see and do virtual classes on it? Are there apps that would benefit a homeschooling family?

Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

I don't own an iPad and I don't homeschool my children but I've read an article online where a mother shared her experience when using iPad to her homeschooled kids. It does not replace the home computer but this is cool for homeschool learning. She have used it so far as a white board, video player, educational game console, spelling/vocabulary learning took, interactive geography explores, night sky discovery, doing research in chemistry, playing virtual musical instrument and as an e-book readre.

Even if the iPad is in heavy use it does not ran out of battery fast. She have used it all day without charging once. She started their homeschool day by watching PBS video. She also use the National Geographic World Atlas to view different countries in the video. After that they tackle Match using Adobe Ideas app as whiteboard.
They also had some puzzles in the free Tangram XL app and played rounds of Traffic Jam.
The iPad is really great and cool device in educating children.

The iPad would make a great learning tool for any child, including those that are taking homeschooling. There are a great deal of applications that are educational, and even some iPad apps that are designed just with homeschooling in mind.

Some of the great applications for learning include:
iLiveMath apps, which include several different types including animals and winter spors.
MathSpin 1-3
iHomeEducator

There are also some that are made for chemistry, astrology, spelling, vocabulary and even virtual musical insturments.

There are also iPad apps that are designed to help teachers with their lesson plans. I would expect that these could be helpful for parents as well. After all, you are being a teacher for your child. Here is a link that have list of applications for educators:

I believe the iPad would be useful for homeschool use. I wondered about how it would be to use one when I tutor my students in mathematics. It's similar to homeschooling in that I work in the home of the student, one on one. Anything that can make learning fun for students would be helpful. Kids get bored with doing the routine homework out of the book, especially in subjects that they aren't very interested in. The are several really good educational apps for the iPad. In fact, I asked a question here for good educational apps for the iPad. Many apps are not that expensive and some are free, so you probably wouldn't have to spend a lot of extra money to get some beneficial educational apps for your iPad.

I homeschool my daughter, as well. My son just started college this year so I am down to just one student:)

I looked into the iPad to see if they offered anything interesting for homeschoolers and from what I read, it is not worth investing in the iPad for that purpose.

They do have virtual classes, but I have read they are audio only.

I think the home computer and laptop are good enough for homeschooling. There are so many online resources that a home computer should be good enough. You can find CDroms to use at home, or specialty sites. I use Math Cafe, or I should say, I did. My daughter is past that now, but there you can print worksheets, which I tend to do often.

The answer is yes! Currently there are a lot of apps that are useful for the iPad but there is no total solution for schooling. I believe it is only a mater of time however for someone to make a good comprehensive homeschooling app. I hope to provide answers and guidance at www.homeschooltablet.com
I try and put educational apps for my kids on my iPhone. Currently some of thier favorites are i Write Words, Teach Me Kindergarten, BrainPOP, Bob Books, Matching Zoo, Pocket Phonics, and Alphabet tracing.
