Would Mobile Broadband through Verizon be any better than Satellite? (See Details for situation)

My aunt and uncle live out in the country and there aren't any service providers for high speed internet. Currently their only option is to go through their satellite provider. As you can see from the prices below, those prices are ridiculous in relation to the speeds they would get!

They are paying for the cheapest one right now from HughesNet and it is slower than dialup. It's so frustrating to do anything. They have full service on their Verizon cell phones where they live, so a tower must be in a somewhat close area. Would they have better results (speed wise) with mobile broadband? Those speeds are not worth any of that money.
Tip for best answer: M$3.00

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

Assuming that you dont have the DSL option, below are my suggestions:

Option 1: You can improve dial up Internet performance by using one of the dial up accelerators list here.

http://www.pcworld.com/article/107372/speed_up_your_dialup_connection.html

you can also check with your dial up provider, most of the dial up services come with their own accelerators. Google used to have a free tool, but not available anymore.

Option 2: To use a Mobile broadband would really be a great option if you are in a 3G coverage area. Since I am not sure where your aunt lives, you can use the following links to check who has the better coverage - Sprint, Verizon or ATT. or if you provide the zip code, I can recommend the best provider.

There are 3 types interfaces for mobile broadband cards - USB, regular PC card and Express card. You can use USB device with your laptop and desktop as well. Most of the laptops come with one PC card slot. New laptops come with express cards slot.

You can also buy a wireless router with a mobile broadband card slot to set up a home wifi. You can set up the router to automatically connect and disconnect based on the demand. use the link below to check on the mobile broadband router. You can unplug the card and use it on your laptop if you are travelling.

I currently use a Linksys with Sprint EVDO Rev A card. I am very satisfied. I also have VoIP phone service on the same mobile broadband access.

Yes! Wow, that sucks that they have to pay so much money for such slow service. Definitely go with the mobile broadband. Verizon's not the fastest out there, but it'll definitely be an upgrade from that pricing. Also, it's portable too because it's a monthly fee whereas those prices are ridiculous.

Good luck!

That really depends. If the tower near their house is a 3g tower, then yes, they would get faster speeds. But if it is not a 3g tower then they would potentially have even slower speeds than what they have now. Price wise, Verizon is 39.99 for 250 MB or 59.99 for 5 GB. That basically means you can recieve either 250 megabytes or 5 gigabytes (5,120 megabyte) over their service or face overages. Also, only one computer at a time could use the internet with the Verizon mobile broadband. If that works for them, and it is a 3g tower, then yes it could be worth it. If it is not a 3g tower they should stay away from Verizon and check with either AT&T or Sprint to see if they have 3g coverage at their house.

I have the iPhone and I get one bar at their house sometimes. Definately not a 3G AT&T Tower. I'll have to find out about Verizon's tower. Thanks.

Check the Verizon coverage. Last year, I visited family that lives in a fairly rural area in Ohio. No DSL. No cable internet. They have a Verizon USB adapter that they use on a desktop computer. Not as fast as DSL (latency issues), but tons better than dial-up, which is sketchy because of the long phone line distances.

It can be unplugged and used anywhere there's a signal. Use a laptop while traveling, or at temporary office or construction site.

Both Linksys and Netgear have wireless routers that handle 3G cellular connections. Netgear has one that handles USB from Verizon:
