Would Kurt Cobain be considered iconic today if he had not killed himself? What do you think he'd be doing if he was still alive?
As it is, he has a sort of iconic status and I think it has everything to do with the fact that he killed himself while he was still pretty young. If he were alive today--whether or not he was still producing music--I think he'd probably be just another former rock star now dismissed by indie snobs and youth culture as "no longer relevant."
What do you think ... if Kurt was still alive, do you think he'd still be a successful and popular recording artist? Or would he be doing something else altogether?

Perhaps my love of Nirvana skews my overall opinion, but though I see Kurt Cobain's supposed suicide as lending to his fame I do think he would still be an icon today had he not died in the manner he did. His music was well liked and is still well liked even today. Like many artists, Tool, Nine Inch Nails, A Perfect Circle, he may have faded a bit into the back ground but would likely still have a large following of what's considered hardcore fans. The loyal ones who liked the music because it was good and not because it was popular.
Reading Kurt's journals I don't think he would have sold out and changed sounds just to stay on top, but I don't think he'd have gone the way of the has-been.
