Would a wrong power adapter prevent scanning software from seeing the scanner?

I have a Umax Astra 6450 scanner and am using the power adapter for a Astra 1220u scanner. The scanning software does not "see" the scanner as plugged in and powered up (which it is).

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

Here is a link to the power adapter:

http://umax.com/scanners/index.jsp?cate=Scanners%3A+Accessories&skunum=68300061-0000

From the Umax site, "The power adapter shown here should ONLY be for the Astra 1210P, 3450, 5470, 4400/4450, 6400/6450. The unit shown here is rated for 120 volts AC in, 12 volts DC out at a capacity of 1.7 amps."

Some other Umax scanners use a lower current (0.75A) adapter, so make sure yours supplies enough current (1.7A at 12 volts), otherwise it may actually not work, even if it has enough power for it to appear to power on.

According to http://www.umax.com/support/knowledge/specifications.jsp?model=Astra+6450 , this unit has a Firewire (IEEE1394) connector. Assuming Windows XP, have you verified that you have a IEEE 1394 bus host controller shows up in Device Manager? Have you used the firewire port before, to verify it is functional?

Assuming the output from the power adapters are the same (or close enough) you shouldn't have a problem. If the scanner turns on and seems to function properly I'd say you're safe.

You say that the scanning software doesn't see the scanner, does that mean that the operating system (Windows XP, Mac OS X, etc) recognizes the scanner?

If the OS sees it and correctly identifies it, but the scanning software doesn't, it might be time to try some different software.

I seriously doubt it. That's not the kind of symptom an incompatible power source would cause. If the scanner is able to turn on normally and everything, then I really can't imagine what fault the adapter could be at.

Nope. Something like that it's more likely to be the USB cable or the scanner drivers than the power cord.

This will cause a problem!!! I've seen many people attempt this sort of thing over the years with everything from external dial-up modems to routers, etc. The slightest difference in voltage can cause unexpected behavior. The fact that the plug fits is meaningless.
