Would a full grown male adult be able to defend himself against a 200 lb chimpanzee who was trying to maul him?

I heard about that story that was replayed on Oprah today. The story about the 200 lb chimpanzee mauling the 57 year old woman and, well, you know. Part of the story goes that the one responding officer was attacked and quickly resorted to shooting the chimp.

Absolutely not without weapons... if a 200lb chimpanzee had its mind made up to injure or kill an adult male even of roughly the same weight the man would be virtually defenseless against the chimp.

They are strong.. in 1924 at the Bronx Zoo and with a dynamometer a test was participated in by a 165lb chimp named "Boma" and using his right hand only he was able to pull 847 pounds. A man of the same weight in the same test would only be able to muster 210lbs. (Reference) At that StraightDope source are other stories of superhuman strength achieved by both male and female chimps and every one of them would simply kick the crap out of any of us if they wanted to.

Chimpanzees are 5 to 7 times stronger than humans and when we take into consideration the teeth and maneuverability I simply cannot imagine a scenario where a weaponless human of any weight outfights an adult chimpanzee.

This BBC video shows a limited view of a violent chimp attack where the victors cannibalize the fallen. I think that willingness to kill and eat a perceived enemy of the same species over territory qualifies the chimpanzee as a certain human vs chimp winner and to the winner go the spoils.

I think I've read stories of chimps being able to pull a man's arm from its socket. Couldn't find an absolute solid source for that in a quick search though.

No way, man - NO WAY. Look up the really sad story of St. John and LaDonna Davis and their pet chimp, or read about it in the book Everyday Survival.
