Worst name ever for a child?

Reading this article about poor Adolf Hitler Campbell, I started to wonder about other hideous names parents have given their children. The best (or rather worst) one I can think of is the one a college friend of mine gave her son:

Hopper.

Although she said it was pronounced "Hupper" we all know the child will be called hopper his whole life. She said it was a family name.

One of the most unfortunate names that I've ever run across is Ima Hogg, the daughter of 19th Century Texas Governor James Hogg. She overcame her unfortunate name, however, and is remembered for her great support of the arts and public service in Texas.

This is a lot less imaginative than the other answers, but I've always hated two names that have been popping up among the kids my generation is having:

Machaela (Ma-CAY-luh) for girls, apparently. Awful-sounding, spelled ridiculously, and way too common.

Jayden. Apparently for both boys and girls. Ugh.

I completely agree. There was a brief time when it was fashionable to name girls after their dads (I mean since the Roman times), so Michael's daughter became Michaela (the proper spelling); Don's daughter became Donna; Paul's daughter became Paula, etc. When Earl's daughter became Earline people realized it had gone WAY too far.

I've always like the Beyond Jennifer and Jason books, because the authors track trends and cluster names (like the whole Madison/Michaela/Kayla/ Bailey/Hailey/Caitlin cluster or the Emily/Emma/Amelia cluster). A lot of parents want something unique but they don't know what IS unique so they either pick something absurdly common, or something that's so far out there as to need backup oxygen.

A NYTimes blog actually had a contest for worst baby name in April. The winner was Iona Knipl (typical response: I own two!) but they had plenty of other ridiculous names like:
Charman Toilette
Chastity Beltz
Wrigley Fields
Justin Credible
Tiny Bimbo
Michele Lynn.

There's also a book of bad baby names at http://www.badbabynames.net/

A former co-worker once told me about a client's assistant with an unusual name. She spoke with the assistant frequently on the phone, but was taken aback when she saw the name spelled out. The woman's name was pronounced Sha-TAY-ud. It was spelled S-h-i-t-h-e-a-d. Very disturbing that a parent would put that on a birth certificate. Don't ask me why she didn't use a nickname or spell it differently.

I have a collection of books published in the late 70's and early 80's by a guy named John Train. His wasn't a funny name as such, but it was funny when you consider that what he did was collect odd names of real people. He was in the financial world and a writer for the New Yorker magazine, and people would send him these odd names all the time. He required real proof, such as the actual page of the magazine, newspaper, phone book or other record it came from. People from all over the English-speaking world would send him names. He's still alive but I don't know if he's still writing or not.

Some of the weirder ones he found:

Null Void, schoolteacher

Ingeborg von Zitzewitz (kind of has a rhythm to it)

Heidi Yum-Yum Gluck

Had-Jesus-Christ-Not-Died-For-Thee-Thou-Hadst-Been-Damned Barebones (in the 1600's in England. When he became an adult he changed his name to Nicholas Barber. I can only imagine the bullying...)

When I was working in an office during college, I happened across a couple of doozies I've never forgotten:

Flossie Odor
Glossie Herring

Both, just.....ewwwww.

My cousin works for an Insurance company and he says he sees all kinds of "unusual" names.
There are also web sites devoted to odd names, names in poor taste, names owing to stupid parents, etc.

Some low-lights:
Placentah - (not spelled like placenta)
People named after products and booze, like:
Shaquanetta
Ny’Quail
Breyoncé
Prada
Alize

My cousin said there were also people named after sexually transmitted diseases (but not spelled the same way)
Clamydia

There is some Folklore surrounding couples naming their girl child: Female. Not sure if it is true or just legend:
Female. That's pronounced Fa-mal-ee - like tamale

My mom was a public school teacher. She saw names spelled all kinds of odd ways. She had a student named Queen Esther (a first name).

From the blog:
http://www.notwithoutmyhandbag.com/babynames/1.html

NotWithoutMyHandBag.com tracks bad baby names. The blogger gets submissions from viewers, only to have the name choices skewered by the blogger.

Subscriber writes: For the first name I like Mercedes, Michaela, Marissa, Madison, and Makenzie For a middle name I like Alezae' (Alize) like the liquor.

Blogger replies: Nothing like being named after a cheap mass market spritzer to define your personality.

It seems there is a limitless amount of names in poor taste.

Something whose irony is not lost on me!! ;-)

I was a teacher for a number of years. I came across a handful of questionable names all with accents on syllables that made them different from the real words:
Lemonjello and Orangejello were twins (obviously) /le-mahn-ja-lo/ and /o-rahn-ja-lo/
Demon /day-mahn/
Tequilla /tay-quil-a/

I have an awful first name for a girl, though I wouldn't trade it for another: Porter

Finally, what kind of parents who have the last name Trickle, name their son Richard (or Dick)?

Also I second the Zappa family.

Porter is a great name! Now I can see complaining if you were called Stout.

A good porter is one of my favorites. George Washington's too!

Thanks @albanian. I would not change my name, it just often causes confusion: "Is that your first name?" is commonly asked. It is also generally assumed that I am male just based on my name.

I'm just gonna mention a few of people I have actually known. #3: I have not decided if it's awful or awesome:

1. Aquanet (like the hairspray)
2. Shithead (Pronounced Shith-eed)
3. Queen Mention (This was her first and middle name, but also what she goes by)
