Ask anyone in the world what their wishes would be and chances are a significant portion of them would tell you perfect health.
The number one way the world has improved (but still has a way to go) is in healthcare. There are illnesses from 40 years ago and that we don't think twice about any more. Even serious conditions like leukemia have had their short term mortality rates flipped around form 25% to 75% in only the last 20 years.
The second way the world has gotten better is in communication. We still have controversies in every corner of the world, but now at least we make a serious attempt at communicating with our adversaries rather than just bombing them. Worldwide communications have also led to more tolerance of different societies as people become exposed to more and different cultures at a young age.
The final way the world has changed for the better in the last 40 years overlaps with communications as I would say it is the internet. I can't even begin to describe how the internet has changed the world for the better. Freedom of speech is practiced by more people and brought to center stage in places where it isn't allowed. Commerce is now truly global. The list goes on.

What are the top 3 ways the world has got better in the last 40 years?
In 1968, Martin Luther King was assassinated. In 2008, Barack Obama will be inaugurated President of the United States. That's a striking example of a way that the world has got better in the last 40 years.
What are the top 3 ways that the world had got better over the last 40 or so years?
Answers needn't be too detailed, but should be well-reasoned and preferably supported by evidence. The question pertains to the world, so you need not restrict yourself to the US or politics. For example, you could talk about how computing power has changed the world for the better.
No need to discuss ways the world has got worse, that's not the topic here.

I would have to say just off the cuff, first - communication, second - travel, third - ability to gain knowledge and information. We truly live in a global world now that we did not 40 years ago. As with all things there are good and bad and the world is no different. With everything that makes things better it will also bring it's share of problems. With the three things I listed here I would be confident to say the plus's far out weigh the negatives. Good question, I think we will see a lot of great answers.
