I would probably have chosen Morgan Tsvangirai from Zimbabwe, or Hu Jia from China.
Tsvangirai stood up to Robert Mugabe, and brought hope to Zimbabwe of ever getting a future. He is now part of the Mugabe government, despite a suspicious car accident that nearly killed him, widespread fraud during the elections, and much personal abuse by Mugabe.
He endured all that, and still hangs in, trying to make things better for the people there.
I think he would have been a prime candidate for the prize, and Obama would have had his chance in a few years, when we could all look back on all the good things he achieved.

IF the Nobel committee (made up of Norwegian politicians from across the spectrum) had NOT chosen Obama, who SHOULD they have picked?

Did you read the article I cited, mith? I found it an interesting insight and I wonder what you think about it.
I also answered this question on conundrum] about the subject, and why I think the prize comes too early for Obama at this point.
However, I DO think the following citation from the Nobel committee is interesting:
"Who has done the most in the previous year to enhance peace in the world?"
If you think of it, that person IS Obama. The very fact that he was chosen in the US has meant a lot for the Black/White controversy in the US. It has lessened tention around the world, in Iran, Southern America, Northern Korea, and hugely improved political ties with both EU and Russia.
Quite a feat for someone less than a year in office.
I appreciated your remarks, too, and your openness in answering that last question (who has done the most...) That was what prompted me to ask this question, and also was in my remarks earlier this a.m. at that conundrum question.
